  2. Disability refers to a health condition that affects functioning, activity and participation

  3. Disability can be increased or decreased by our surroundings

  4. Some surroundings are ‘more accessible’

  5. Some are ‘less accessible’

  6. ‘Workplace adjustments’ make our workplaces more accessible

  7. This report compared the State Service with the Tasmanian workforce

  8. The report found of Tasmanian workers need a workplace adjustment 7.5% Tasmanian

  9. But only 3.2% of Tasmanian workers need a workplace adjustment State Service

  10. That’s a big difference

  11. The report found our hiring managers have the power to change this

  12. Our hiring managers will recruit people with disability if…

  13. …they thinkit is reasonable to do so

  14. And if…

  15. They are asked to and they can recruit the right person, efficiently

  16. And if…

  17. They can try to see if it will work

  18. And if…

  19. It is affordable

  20. And if…

  21. The person fits in

  22. And if…

  23. It worked last time

  24. Acceptable Testable Affordable Expected Successful Reasonable

  25. That’s a lot of ‘ifs’

  26. This new report offers 11 ideas for better recruitment decision-making

  27. Ideas for more and better specific recruitment programs

  28. Ideas for more accessible open recruitment practices

  29. Ideas that are necessary, achievable, measurable, andaffordable

  30. The report recommends Agencies ‘bust the merit myths’ thatundermine specific recruitment programs

  31. And that agencies depict disability more in employment publications

  32. Though not always as the focus

  33. While individual employees decide if and how their disability is depicted

  34. The report recommends Agencies set their own specific goals for the recruitment of people with disability

  35. And that agencies create clear policies supportingspecific recruitment programs

  36. Including the referral of certain vacancies to Disability Employment Services providers

  37. And more accessible graduate programs

  38. The report recommends Agencies create more work opportunities using external funds and/or support

  39. But not necessarily more recruitment

  40. The report recommends Agencies centrally control their ‘workplace adjustments’

  41. The report recommends Agencies remove potentially discriminatory ‘requirements’ from advertised jobs

  42. And agenciescreate ‘diversity coaches’ to drive lasting change

  43. All together, these simple ideas are designed to help hiring managers succeed

  44. And increase our recruitment of people with disability
