  1. Klaxons

  2. Klaxons are a British indie-rock band based in London, formed in 2005 by Jamie Reynolds, James Righton and Simon Taylor-Davis. In March 2006, the band’s debut single ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’ was released with Angular Records. After this, the band was invited to perform a Maida Vale Studio’s live session by Radio 1. After various offers, Klaxons signed to Polydor (a record label owned by Universal Music Group and headquartered in the UK) in August 2006. “Magick” was the first single released by that label and this was charted at number 29 in the UK Top 40.

  3. Klaxon’s target audience are likely to be indie-rock and alternative music fans rather than people who are into mainstream pop or who enjoy heavy metal, although they are signed to a record label which targets various and wider subcultures. The band can market their sound to their specific audience by creating an alternative ‘look’ and to conform to the stereotypes and conventions of their genre. They could benefit from having a website which could showcase their genre easily and freely to potential fans.

  4. Music videos for songs of the indie-rock and alternative genre often conform to common conventions of being anti-establishment which appeals to those who also consider themselves anti-establishment and alternative. A main convention most artists and bands use in their videos is a performance aspect of them doing a live performance, the main focus of this being to show the audience their motives for working in music are that they are passionate about it, as the genre itself was about and not specifically focused on success. Narrative is also popular within the indie genre as quite often the song lyrics are abstract and don’t usually portray a meaning so a story line helps fans draw conclusions to what the song could be about. Mise-en-scene is often very important for videos of this genre as it provides a more individual and alternative look.
