TQ Model Magnet Goals (1) • Phase 1 (TQ baseline): TQS01 & TQC01 • Develop and verify the coil fabrication technology • Perform a consistent comparison among mechanical support concepts • Same conductor/cable and same coil design • Same fabrication procedures for all coils • Consistent instrumentation and documentation • Lay groundwork for Lab collaboration • Agree on coil module design and fabrication • Share fabrication and instrumentation practices • Integrate coil fabrication steps • Integrate design, fabrication and testing teams

TQ Model Magnet Goals (2) • Phase 2 (mechanical & conductor studies): TQS02, TQC02, TQE01 • TQS02: reconfigure/optimize based on TQS01 results • Adjust pre-load conditions, assembly sequence • If needed, replace one or more coils • TQC02: first TQ coils made with “baseline” 54/61 RRP strand • No changes in the coil/cable design are expected • Optimization of mechanical structure w/TQC01 feedback • TQE01: disassemble TQC01 coil and test in TQS01 structure • Compare coil performance in different structures • (evaluate based on TQS01 and TQC01 results) • Explore the feasibility of collared coil disassembly

TQ Model Magnet Goals (3) • Phase 3 (optimized models): TQS03 and TQC03 • Demonstrate the TQ objectives: • consistently achieve G>200 T/m after training and thermal cycle • evaluate the required design margins (fraction of short sample) • characterize the mechanical performance of the two structures • Support the follow-on model magnet R&D: • LQ models: • Provide the optimized coil design for LQ • Feedback on coil fabrication methods (integrate with LR) • Input for structure selection (integrate with DS) • HQ models: • Design methods/tools and coil fabrication technology • Input for structure selection (integrate with DS)

Basis for the Updated Plan • Schedule information from TQS01 an TQC01 • More accurate information on sub-task requirements • Need to make up for some delay to support 2009 milestone • Feedback from TQS01 test • First quench at 80% of “round strand” short sample • Achieved 87% of “round strand” short sample • We have a good basis to build and improve on • TQS01 & TQC01 coil fabrication approach was successful • Quality and consistency of fabricated coils • Efficiency of the process: resources and facilities • Program and team integration • Need optimization (cable, end parts, layer transition), but no major changes • TQS01 test information is available before start of TQC02 winding • Recommendations from TQ the mechanical review • Extract maximum information at each step; explore variants

TQ01 Update Coil fabrication: 2 months Mechanical analysis: 2-3 months Mechanical models: 3-4 months Sub-task time increase from FY06 plan: • TQS01 training was limited by a localized weakness in one coils • Replacing this coils with a spare (TQS01b) should provide useful feedback • Other changes may be considered

TQ02 Update • TQ01 coil fabrication and TQS01 test results do not indicate any major flaws • Several improvements were identified, but they do not require a cross-section iteration • Coil fabrication process is (finally) well established and optimized • Higher current RRP is required in both TQS and TQC for meaningful comparison • Still missing tooling for coil fabrication in parallel (in particular for winding at LBNL) • TQ02 can replace the “logical” function that was assigned to TQ03 in the present plan • Baseline plan would be to provide go-ahead for LQ by the end of the TQ02 phase

  11. TQE Update • TQ mechanical review recommended to explore variants • Use of full-round collars in TQC01 makes coil exchange more realistic • These tests may help select the best structure • Use of pre-tested coils allows to take more risk in investigating design limits • Schedule can be adjusted according to program priorities and “opportunities” • Scope can be adjusted to respond to test results

  12. TQ03 Update • Two possible uses of TQ03 models • Backup in case TQ02 & TQE does not establish LQ basis • Incorporate any design changes adopted for LQ (one model only) • TQ03 coils are fabricated in parallel • Schedule includes time for a design iteration

  13. Long Quadrupole (LQ) • Magnet program plan includes one LQ in FY08 and one in FY09 • LQ task needs to start in FY07 with tooling and practice coils • TQ, LR and DS need to establish target dates for “ok to proceed” • The updated TQ plan is designed to provide answer by mid-FY07

  14. High Gradient Quadrupole (HQ) • Magnet program plan includes one HQ in FY08 and one in FY09 • HQ start in FY07 would be desirable • LQ takes higher priority – can we do both? • Simplified “Phase 1” HQ using TQ coils as inner layer is under study

Summary • TQ: • Some delay, but overall good progress for TQ01 • Established a performance reference for further optimization • Updated plan takes into account the new information • TQ goal #1: provide the required basis for a timely start of LQ • TQ goal #2: provide the required basis for LQ structure selection • LQ and HQ: • Modularity of TQ tooling should allow smooth transition to LQ • TQ coils may be used as inner double-layer for a “phase 1” HQ
