To talk about these changes in the ways humans in ancient times lived, historians have found it useful to draw a distinction between two terms that are often used interchangeably in ordinary conversations:

Culture = the knowledge, skills, beliefs, practices, customs, habits and other taken-for-granted aspects of daily life in a particular place and time that can be (and often are) passed on from one generation to another or one person to another and that are shared by a group of people as a common way of life
civilization = a number of cities (or city-states) located in proximity to one another which share a common culture city? city-state?
city = a densely populated urban area, in ancient times often surrounded by walls and containing a range of public facilities (water source, temple, markets, etc.) city-state = an independently governed entity consisting of an urban center/settlement and the surrounding lands (which provide food for urban population)
