Understanding Surface Area: Practical Applications in Real Life

In today's exploration of surface area, we uncover its vital role across various real-world scenarios. From determining the right amount of carpeting and paint for home projects to calculating grass needs for planting, understanding surface area is essential. In the fashion industry, knowing body size aids in dress creation, while in skydiving, surface area impacts air resistance. We also touch on how rocks weather faster with increased surface area. Our key learning takeaway: understanding surface area can reduce waste and improve decision-making. Let's delve deeper into its applications!

  1. Quarter 3: Current Events SURFACE AREAin the Real World Andy & Erik

  2. In the House: • Carpeting: Before you put in new carpeting you must know how much you need. • Paint: you must figure out how much paint you will need. • Grass: when planting on a dirt lot you need to know how much grass you need

  3. In The Fashion Industry: When making a dress you need to know the surface area, or dress size of the body.

  4. Other: • Skydiving: the more surface Area the more air resistance. An experiment would be dropping 2 pieces of paper one crumbled one flat., the crumbled one will hit the ground first because it has less surface area. • Weather: when a rock has more surface area and the elements hit it more often, it will weather much faster, this would help find the age

  5. What interested us • When we were going to buy paint, we just bought as many cans as we thought we needed we never found the surface area. We don’t try to find the surface area of anything when we buy something.

  6. What we learned • We learned that instead of going to buy just some amount of paint cans to find the surface area that way no that much paint will be wasted.

  7. What we would like to learn? • What else can Surface Area help us out with?. • What other ways can we apply to the real world.
