  1. Lying, the new, “Great American Way?” Ps 12:1-2

  2. Introduction • “How many of you grew up watching Superman? Was he your favorite superhero? Wasn’t he just the coolest? Do you remember the opening statement that said he fights for “truth, justice, and the American way” “What happened to truth in America? I am not talking about propositional truth: I am talking about telling the truth. Truth is no longer important.” (Dr. Kent Span) • Film producer Linda Obst described Hollywood culture in this manner, “Inhale. Lie. Exhale. Lie”

  3. Introduction • Common lies you hear everyday (Yahoo) • I hope you're fine (to a stranger) • I have read the terms and conditions of use • It wasn't that expensive. • I’m sick and unable to work today • I was working all day long • I'm stuck in traffic • I'm on my way.

  4. Introduction • Thoughts from Marc and Angel Hack Life • Everyone tells a white lie on occasion, it’s just a question of why.  Some white lies save relationships, some ease a hectic situation, and others buy us time.  The list could go on forever.  Stretching the truth is a natural component of human instinct because it’s the easy way out.  We all do it, so there is no reason to deny it.  Honestly, I think the world is probably a better place because of our white lies. • As long as we aren’t hurting others or breaking the law, these innocent lies can make life more pleasant.  They can absorb potential friction between our varying personalities and vacillating moods as we nudge into one another on the quest through our daily routine.  Most of these white lies only stretch an interpretation of what the truth actually is anyways.  Given our rigid optimism to each lead a tailored ideal life, white lies simply cushion us from ourselves.

  5. Introduction • Common white lies and why we tell them • It wasn’t me! – Because some things just aren’t worth taking credit for. • The table will be ready in 5 minutes. – Because it sounds a lot better than 15 minutes. • Oh, yeah.  That makes sense. – Because option B involves admitting that I am clueless. • Thank you so much!  I just love it! – Because telling someone that their gift stinks would make me look like an insensitive jerk. • No, officer… I have no idea how fast I was going. – Because claiming ignorance is sometimes better than admitting to insubordination. • I’m 21, 6’5, with a muscular build. – Because you can’t see me in this online chat room… ha ha! • I thought I already sent that email out.  I’m sure I did. – Because telling you that it was a low priority and I forgot would probably hurt our relationship.

  6. What about truth, justice, and God’s way ? • “The obvious and direct application of Ex 20:16 were the court system and process. God says you shall not give a deceptive witness about your neighbor. God made it clear that in this new society false testimony against a neighbor was anathema” (Dr Kent Span) • Dan 19:15-21 • Lying is an abomination to God • Prov 6:16-19 & 12:22

  7. What about truth, justice, and God’s way ? • Why does God hate lying? • Because His enemy, Satan, is the father of lies • Jn 8:44 • Because God is the God of truth • Ps 31:5 • Because lying is sin • Is 59:1-4

  8. Variations of lying • Outright lies • Ps 34:13; Jer 9:5 • Rumors • Ex 23:1; Prov 17:9; 1 Pet 4:15 • Gossip • Prov 16:26 & 21:23; Eph 4:29-30; 1 Tim 5:11-13 • Slander • Ps 101:5; Eph 4:31-32; 1 Pet 2:1-3 • Flattery • Prov 20:19 & 26:24-28; Rom 16:17-18; 1 Thess 2:5 • False Teaching • 2 Pet 2:1-3; 2 Jn 1:7-11
