  7. Not enough water observe C95 IWUG Leader conflict Ditches poorly maintained O&M Section Chief Seminar by TRF on Local Research Methodology C95 Local Irrigation ResearchTeam

  8. C95 Local Irrigation Research Team: • Established a small research team (25 members). • Assign facilitator (TRF, RID).

  9. 3 Major Problems: • Irrigation water Management. • Rice production. • Farmer debt.

  10. Problem water Management Many farmers could not get enough water when they need it. Tertiary canals were poorly maintained, It was not clear who actually operate water between ditches.

  11. Tool for discussion: • Hand draw map. • Farm plots colors shading.

  12. Method • The working group has named itself as “Slow Train for Sustainable Development” • The methods of the project are the followings: • Antecedent review • Looking for the present situation

  13. Sorting out the demand, the problems, the causes of problems, and the solution • Discussion and take note

  14. Interviewing by questionnaires • Field surveying • Participating in information analysis

  15. Discussing in advantages, mistakes and solution • Launching the local stage of discussion and taking turn to be leader of a stage • Proceeding the improvement and operational solution in the area

  16. Conclusion of the conflict among farmers: • Intake structure sill was too high. • Vegetation in canal block water flow. • Some ditches are broken. • Some ditches serves too large area.

  17. How to improve the situation: • Lower the intake sill. • Clean lateral canal and ditch. • Repair of broken ditch and concrete lining.

  18. How to improve the situation: • Construct new intake. • Assign person to operate check structure. • Improve farm road along ditches. • Establishment of Irrigation fund.

  19. Outcomes 1. Building the research team which has a willingness to work for the community. 2.Learning the wisdom and knowledge components of local communities through participatory learning process. (hand draw maps/forum to discuss on data analysis, problems, cause and the way to solve the problems.)

  20. 3.Realizing problems on water usage for agriculture in the area of C 95 canal and understand others and public common interest. 4.Building process of leading to the changes of the community’s concept (learning to rely on themselves/engaged to propose their idea/ speak it out/find the way to solve the problems together.)

  21. Summary 1. Owing to the local irrigation project, we have learned the ways of life of farmers in the irrigation area. 2. Insufficient knowledge and understanding on participation in community management. 3. Applied the local research process to the Farmers Participatory Irrigationto solve the problem.

  22. The importance is to develop and strengthen water users’ group and RID staff on “Participatory Irrigation Management” in order to achieve the sustainable development. Disseminating from place to place/generation to generation.
