  1. Guttenberg By Larisa D. Ashton

  2. The first book he printed was the bible • The first book Gutenberg is known to have printed was the Bible. Explain why you think he chose that book to be his first printed project. • Gutenberg may have realized that since it was so much cheaper and easier to print this way he could sell them for cheaper and make more money that way • Or Gutenberg could have wanted to get as many bibles out as possible in order to help educate people about the bible

  3. Why rich people could read but poor people couldn’t • Before Gutenberg's development of the printing press, most of the few people who were able to read were either rich or religious leaders. Why do you think that was so? • I think it was that way because books used to cost so much but when Gutenberg's printing press came out books were a lot cheaper so there was a reason for poor people to learn to read

  4. More people can read how rich people felt about that • After the development more people were able to read. How do you think rich people felt about this? Explain. • I think that rich people didn’t like that suddenly they weren’t holding the power of knowledge from books over the poor peoples heads

  5. Information is power • It has been said that, "information is power". What do you think that means? • I think it means that if you know something that another person doesn’t know you would have an advantage over them • For example if you know that a solar eclipse is just the moon blocking the sun and another person doesn’t you could tell them that it’s something else and trick them into giving you something to bring the sun back

  6. Gutenberg life span • 1398-1468 • We aren’t actually positive when Gutenberg was born but we do know that it was somewhere around 1398 • He died February 3, 1468 we know this much

  7. Gutenberg’s Birth • Gutenberg was born in the German city of Mainz • He was the youngest son of an upper-class merchant named Friele Gensfleisch our Laden • His mother was his fathers second wife Else Wyrich she was the daughter of a shopkeeper

  8. Gutenberg’s early life • Not much is known about Gutenberg’s early life • His dad worked with the ecclesiastic mint • Gutenberg grew up knowing the trade of goldsmithing • in 1411, Mainz there was an uprising against the Patricians and more than a hundred families were forced to leave • As a result the Gutenberg’s were thought to have moved to Eltville am Rhein, where his mom had an inherited estate • According to historian Heinrich Wallau, all that is known about Gutenberg's childhood is that he wasn’t in Mainz in 1430 • We assume that he moved to Strasburg for political reasons • We think he went to the University of Erfurt to study

  9. Gutenberg’s life • Not much is known about Gutenberg for the next 15 years • In March 1344 a letter by him indicates that he was living in Strasbourg where he had some relatives on his moms side • It looks like he was a goldsmith member enrolled in the Strasburg militia • In 1437 it looks like Gutenberg was teaching a wealthy tradesmen how to polish gems • In 1436/37 his name comes up in connection to a broken promise of marriage to a women in Strassburg, Ennelin • Whether the marriage actually took place is not recorded • After his dad’s death in 1419 he is mentioned in the inheritance proceedings

  10. Gutenberg’s life • About 1439 he was involved in a financial misadventure where he was making polished metal mirrors for sale to pilgrims to Aachen. In 1439 the city was planning to exhibit its collection of relics from Emperor Charlemagne. But the event was delayed by a year due to a severe flood. And the capital already spent could not be repaid. When the question of satisfying the investors came up Gutenberg is said to have promised to share a secret. • It has been speculated widely that the secret was Gutenberg’s idea of printing with movable type • Legend has it that the idea came to Gutenberg like a “ray of light” • Until at least 1444 Gutenberg lived in Strassbourg • It was in Strassbourg in 1440 that Gutenberg is said to have perfected his idea for printing and unveiled it based on his research

  11. Gutenberg after 4 year gap • In 1448 Gutenberg was back in Mainz • In Mainz Gutenberg took a loan from his brother-in-law Arnold Gelthus • The loan was possibly for a printing press or something related • By this time Gutenberg may have been famillier with intaglio printing

  12. Gutenberg 1450 • By this time the printing press was in operation • A German poem had been printed possibly the first thing printed there • Gutenberg was able to convince a wealthy money lender Johann Fust for a loan of 8000 guilders • Peter Schoffer joined the enterprise too • Schoffer had worked as a scribe in Paris and is thought to have designed some of the first typefaces • Gutenberg’s workshop was set up at Hof Humbrecht
