  2. Mobility on a Grand Scale

  3. “There is no future for the automotive industry without the promotion of environmental technology. Toyota is convinced that only companies that succeed in this area will be acceptable to society. The development of environment-related technology is one of Toyota’s key responsibilities.” The Call To Action Fujio ChoChairman, Toyota Motor Corporation

  4. What does the Market want? A significant and growing percentage of customers indicate a willingness to buy an environmentally friendly vehicle If, and only if, all other attributes are Equal or Better

  5. To be successful, new automotive technologies must be Transparent to the user As reliable and as durable as current vehicles Offer consistent performance Offer value Challenges for New Technologies Most customers are unwilling to accept compromises for the sake of new technology or environmental benefit • For positive environmental impact, must also • Sell in mass market quantities

  6. The Path to the Ultimate Eco-car Ultimate eco-car Hybrid Technology Synthetic fuel Gaseous fuel Gasoline / Diesel Hydrogen Electricity Bio fuel Right time Right place Right vehicle

  7. Hybrids are a Core Technology • Toyota Prius • Over 20,000 Toyota Prius vehicles have been sold • since the vehicle launched in Canada 10 years ago • The #1 reason Canadians purchase a Toyota Prius is • fuel economy

  8. Hybrids are a Core Technology

  9. Hybrids; Mobility Value Chain impact Hybrid technology has an immediate and dramatic impact on the Mobility Value Chain. Why? Hybrids are about conservation, and are infrastructure-independent.

  10. PHVs; Best of Both Worlds • The efficiency of an electric vehicle for short trips • The convenience of today’s existing gasoline • infrastructure for longer trips

  11. PHVs; Toyota Prius PHV Prius Plug-in Global Demonstration Program www.facebook.com/ToyotaCanadaPriusPlugin

  12. Most daily car trips in Canada are within a 20km range Issues with larger batteries: Weight (affecting Fuel Efficiency) Cost (affecting Customer Adoption) PHVs; Balancing Weight, Range & Cost

  13. PHVs; Mobility Value Chain impact • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles can be viewed as a “next step” in the evolution of the ultimate eco-car, for the following reasons: • They do not require dramatic lifestyle changes on the part of the consumer • Offered in the right package (Weight, Range & Cost), they can be adopted by • consumers without waiting for the “plug-in / charging” infrastructure to be • put into place nationally.

  14. EVs

  15. EVs; Mobility Value Chain impact • For the immediate future, when comparing Hybrids, PHVs and EVs, the Electric Vehicles can potentially have the largest impact to the Mobility Value Chain. • Where will consumers plug-in these vehicles? • What is the source of the electricity? • Can existing electric grids handle EVs charging in mass quantities?

  16. EVs; Mobility Value Chain impact Wheel-to-Well Efficiency; Electric cars are NOT “zero emissions” vehicles… … because power generation creates emissions! Mining coal Transporting coal Burning coal

  17. Ultimately, the Consumer will decide
