  3. Satirical Devices • Understatement: When a speaker makes a serious problem seem inconsequential and unimportant. (for the sake of sarcasm) • Overstatement: When a speaker makes a minor problem seem critical and very serious. • Hyperbole: Over-exaggerated speech for the sake of making a point. A vividly gross distortion of the truth.

  4. Rhetorical Appeals… • Ethos: Appeals to a person’s ethical side- moral values, patriotism/nationalism and pride, etc. • Pathos: Emotional appeals to gain sympathy or incite emotions (anger, fear, etc.) in the audience. • Logos: Logical arguments, facts, and examples.
