  1. Capitalism,Socialism, andCommunism

  2. Capitalism • Capitalism – an economic system based on private ownership and on the investment of money in business ventures in order to make a profit.

  3. Capitalism • Adam Smith • University professor in Scotland • Supported Capitalism • Wrote “The Wealth of Nations”

  4. Capitalism • Ideas: • Businesses compete with each other for the consumer’s money. • Each business tries to provide goods and services that are better and less expensive than their competition.

  5. Capitalism • A market economy aims to produce the bestgoods at the lowest prices. • Supply and Demand • Government should not interfere in the economy. • Laissez faire

  6. Capitalism • Laissez faire – letting owners of industry and business set working conditions without interference • No government regulations, such as minimum wage laws

  7. Capitalism • Positive Effects: • Competition led to progress • People have control over their own businesses • Negative Effects: • Unequal distribution of wealth can lead to social unrest • Huge difference between rich and poor

  8. Socialism

  9. Socialism • Socialism – An economic system in which the factors of production are owned by the public and operate for the welfare of all.

  10. Socialism • Government actively regulates the economy • Controls major industries and resources

  11. Socialism • Positive Effects: • Social Equality (ex: public education) • Economic Equality (ex: there is less disparity between the pay for jobs) • Negative Effects: • Unequal distribution of wealth can lead to social unrest • Huge difference between rich and poor

  12. Communism “The worker of the world has nothing to lose, but their chains, workers of the world unite.” - Marx

  13. Communism • Communism – an economic system in which all means of production are owned by the people, private property does not exist, and all goods and services are shared equally.

  14. Communism • Karl Marx • German journalist • Radical Socialist • Wrote “The Communist Manifesto”

  15. Communism • Friedrich Engels • Son of a wealthy German textile entrepreneur • Radical Socialist • Co-Wrote “The Communist Manifesto” and “Das Capital”

  16. Communism • In many ways, Communism was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and Capitalism. • The Industrial Revolution was a time period in our history where companies used machines in factories to make goods. Industries made a lot of money and became very popular, but a lot of people sacrificed their needs during this time period because they received very little money for their hard work in factories.

  17. Communism • The Industrial Revolution made class struggle huge(rich vs. poor) • People who “have” took advantage of people who “didn’t have”

  18. Communism • Workers are exploited by employers • Children can be workers and are paid almost nothing for working long, hard hours. • The labor of workers profits employers • Workers don’t get any of the profits; only the “bosses”, or employers, receive all of the money.

  19. Communism • Marx and Engels called for workers of the world to unite and overthrow the rule of the rich. • Wealth would be redistributed • Classes and private property would cease to exist

  20. Communism • Positive Effects: • Supposedly represents a more “fair” life • Better healthcare • More opportunities because there is less of a gap between the rich and the poor • Negative Effects: • Too much government control • Very little personal freedoms • Difficult to do better (ex: If I work harder than my co-workers, it doesn’t matter. I won’t make more money.)
