  2. CHARACTERIZATION Characters are the people, animals, or imaginary creatures who take part in the action of a work of literature. Characterization is the way a writer creates and develops a character’s traits.

  3. Characters can be: the people, animals, or imaginary creatures in a work of literature.

  4. Character Traits are: the qualities shown by a character.

  5. Inferences are: Reasonable judgments made by the reader, based on prior knowledge and the text. Now that you have the definitions under your hat: Let’s look at and identify the methods writers use to develop characters.

  6. Students should be able to point out the words that support the method of characterization. Direct comments the author makes: Seth was arrogant and rarely listened to what others had to say.

  7. Physical descriptions: Reba’s purple hair hung in her face and her leather jacket was torn.

  8. Thoughts, speech, and actions: “I’m not nervous,” Ramon said, biting his fingernails.

  9. What other characters think, say, or do toward one another. Mary narrowed her eyes and said, “Isabel, don’t lie to me again.”

  10. On your note paper complete each sentence with the correct conclusions about Elena and Andrew in the following passages. Read each passage and complete each sentence. Ed stepped right in front of Carla to smile smoothly at Sky. Carla, who’d been in mid-sentence, could not believe his rudeness. Ed’s actions suggest: that Ed is rude. “Do you know who I am?,” Ed said to Sky. “I’ve been looking for someone of your good taste and class to come to the dance with me.   11. “We were talking!” Sky hissed, waving Ed away with a flick of her left hand. This action reveals that Sky is not easily flattered or flustered. Carla, who had gone silent beamed with satisfaction. Ed just laughed. “Thank you,” whispered Carla, “That was great!” This action suggests that Carla is shy and grateful for her friendship with Sky.
