  1. Knee replacements have become a very popular surgery for the elderly or those who have a malfunctioning in their knee either since birth, or due to certain physical activity. People today are accepting knee replacement surgeries with a positive tone, as they have realized that with advancements in technologies and procedures, knee replacements can keep patients at least risk and maximum benefits. However, everything has its own side-effects, even if at the very least. And, as responsible doctors, we make it a point to let our patients know about every possible condition that may arise with any sort of treatment. So, while we say that knee replacements can bring to you a quality of life you can never have with your injured or painful knee, we also bring to your notice the various kinds of risks that are possible to occur if you are unlucky. But, we also let you know how you can avoid these risks. Infection after a knee replacement occurs in only about 1 out of 100 patients, but if you are that “1”, you need to be prepared. Even though very low, but if you are likely to have an infection, you may face serious complications. While some may see the infection in a short while after the surgery, others may notice them anytime within two years of surgery. You would know that you have an infection if you experience moderate itching or swelling in the surgical area, even after a few months after the surgery. While itching and swelling for the first few months may be normal, if it is constant, you may need to consult your orthopaedic surgeon in Kota. You should

  2. also keep a check for extreme fevers, chills, excessive pain around the knee, and smelly drainage. Any of these symptoms when observed, you will have to immediately seek treatment so that the infection doesn’t spread around the area and worsen your condition. Don’t try to treat the infection on your own, even if the signs seem obvious and moderate. You never know when a simple infection can lead to a severe condition! So, you need to consult a professional in such a case. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics or surgery, depending upon the severity of the condition and depth of infection. If a surgery is required, it may involve removal of the infected replacement knee and cleaning the area before replacing it, or having a debridement. We have spoken about how you can treat an infection if such a condition arises. But, what if we can stop the condition from arising at all? Won’t it be great!? So, we bring to you a few suggestions that you may follow to avoid an infection in the first place. First and foremost, keep your surgical area clean. Next, something that is very absurd but true, is that a dental issue can more likely develop an infection and spread to your knee. Thus, it is suggested that you see a dentist before your surgery, and have your cavities and other problems checked and treated well in advance. So, now you know what you can do before a surgery to prevent an infection. And, you also know what you can do after a surgery if an infection arises. In any case, you always have Maitri Hospital’s orthopaedic surgeon in Kota by your side for any kind of advice, surgery, treatment, and assistance.
