BLM Assessment of RE Power Potential on Western US Lands • BLM/NREL Partnership formed Aug 2001 • Lee Otteni, RE Program Mgr – WO Detail • Mike Kirby, Assoc Director, NSTC • NREL tasked to conduct RE assessment to identify high potential for CSP, PV, Wind, Biomass, and Geothermal in Western US- Jan 02 • FEMP provides NREL funding for BLM effort • BLM/NREL use GIS to identify BLM Planning units for high potential for RE power production • NREL/BLM/Industry develop screening criteria

BLM Assessment of RE Power Potential on Western US Lands • NREL Technologists apply rules for high potential opportunities to GIS maps w/screening applied for CSP, PV, Wind, Biomass • BLM/NREL team identify top pick KGRAs for near term Geothermal development • Analysis results in top 25 planning units (of 116) for CSP, PV, Wind, Biomass • 35 Geothermal Top Pick KGRA identified • Draft Report posted on BLM Home Page for 60 day comment period – 5/13/02 • 30 comments received - all support BLM effort

BLM Assessment of RE Power Potential on Western US Lands • Draft Report still available for review at: http://www.nrel.gov/femp/news.html • Final Report with CD - GIS data, GIS maps (.ppt files), Planning Unit tables (.xls files) – Oct 02 • Initial BLM objective to assist in prioritizing inclusion of RE in Land Use Plan revisions • Surprising outcome of very high wind industry interest in BLM lands since draft report issued

BLM Assessment of RE Power Potential on Western US Lands • BLM/DOE/NREL Partnership Commitment • BLM NSTC, DOE Golden, NREL sign MOU for RE expertise – July 02 • Proposed BLM Interagency Agreements for DOE Lab support • NREL team with Argonne National Lab – Programmatic EIS for Wind in Western US • NREL team with NSTC – GIS Based National Right-of-Way Corridor Planning System for BLM Field Use • BLM Wind Power Development Update • Take it Away Ray!
