What is SMART Recovery? • Abstinence oriented recovery organisation focussed on peer led mutual aid • Secular & science based • Tools from REBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing, therapeutic lifestyle change • Evolved from partnership between people in recovery and addictions psychologists • Also works in partnership with professionals

  3. SMART in the community • Network of peer led mutual aid meetings • Led by Facilitator • Learns by participating • Plus training course run by SRUK • Manuals and materials • Online community / meetings

  5. SMART Facilitation • Flowing discussion • Keep meeting to structure • Encourage use of the tools • Focus on addictive behaviour • Encourage participants to help each other • Encourage rational and scientific perspective • The facilitator is not a therapist..

Partnership scheme • Provider puts forward staff to train as ‘SMART Recovery Champions’ • Kick start and facilitate meetings or run programmes such as InsideOut • Over time, move to co-facilitation and then peer facilitation supervised by champion • Encourage peers to start own meetings in community

Commissioners + Providers • Improve sustained treatment outcomes • Evidence suggests that engagement with mutual-aid improves long term outcomes • 12 step approaches are not for everyone • Encourage mutual aid • NICE states that people in drug treatment should be offered support to access mutual aid, including SMART Recovery

  10. Choice in mutual aid? • Lots of people drop out of MA groups, including some people who would benefit • Some of these people would maintain attendance at a group with a different approach • Some of these would, as a result, sustain recovery
