Interview
This presentation explores the essential principles of effective interviewing, emphasizing the roles of both the interviewer and the person being interviewed (PI). It covers three main principles: asking to gather information, allowing the PI to provide insights, and maintaining neutrality. Key strategies include formulating open-ended questions, avoiding leading inquiries, and actively listening for deeper responses. By understanding what to do and what not to do, participants will learn how to conduct professional interviews that yield rich, valuable content.

Three main principles 1. We ask they answer 2. We ask to gather information 3. They have to say it
Three main principles 1. We ask, they answer • An interview is a professional conversation • The PI (person being interviewed) and the journalist have different roles • The journalist controls the conversation • But the PI is the star it’s all about him/her • Be neutral
Three main principles 2. We ask to get information • There is always a clear purpose with an interview • We ask until we know what we came to find out • You ask on behalf on some else (the reader) ask their questions
Three main principles 3. They have to say it • Let the PI make the conclusions • Avoid “yes and no” questions • Be open to surprising answers
What NOT to do • When you don’t ask a question • Two questions at the same time • Don’t ad a statement after the question • Don’t make conclusions that are not entirely true
What NOT to do • Avoid trigger-words • Don’t ask leading questions • Don’t ask closed questions
What NOT to do Some examples
When you don’t ask a question IW: You were visiting your grandmother when the pictures were printed in the papers PI: Yes.
Two questions at the same time IW: How are you? Do you have any confident left in yourself? PI: A little.
Don’t ad a statement after the question IW: What did you think about, when it was all quiet? It must have been quiet sometimes … PI: Yes, sometimes it was quiet, because…
Don’t make conclusions on behalf of the PI 1.IW: All your books are about the relationship between a father and his son PI: No. That’s not true. 2.IW: You must have been overwhelmed with happiness when you got the message IP: I was pleased when I got the call
Avoid trigger-words 1. IW: Isn’t it true that you are a weak prime minister and that you basically are unable to lead this country? PI: That is complete nonsense. What this is about is… 2. IW: How does it feel to be so incredible beautiful? PI: I am not that beautiful…
Don’t ask leading questions IW: Isn’t it true that you felt very ashamed after the news got out? PI: Ehh… sort of…
Don’t ask closed questions IW: Do you agree that this is the right way to go about it? PI: Yes
How to ask the right questions • Ask open questions • Be neutral • Ask simple questions
Ask the right questions • What • Why • Where • When • How
The three magic words: What, how, why • The event What happened? • Description How did it happen? • Explanation Why did it happen
The good question – some examples: • What happened? • What did she say? • What was the most important…? The turning point? The most difficult? • What do you mean by that? • What could that be? Give an example please
The good question – some examples: • Why? • How is it that… • What are your options now? • What are the consequences? • What went through your head when…?
Assignment • Analyze these questions and rewrite them as good journalistic questions!
Make a strategy to get good answers • Write down your goal whit the interview • Choose a starting point • Plan how you will reach your goal • Make PI fell safe better answers
Important: • Stay focused – What is it you want to know? • Be an active listener – what is he saying and what isn’t he saying. • Respect the pauses – be patient • Ask follow-up questions • What before why start by establishing the facts • Take notes!
The contract • Always make a contract with the PI • A contract is an oral understanding between IW and PI • Be clear about what you are planning on using the interview for • Can the PI edit the quotes after the interview? • When will the interview be used?
Assignment Write a profile Do an interview and write a profile on one of your fellow students. Be sure to include some description and direct quotes in the article. Remember to choose an angel/theme for your interview/article
How to focus the interview • What are your interests? • Tell me about the greatest experience you have ever had (a journey, a sports event, a family memory etc.) • What do you want to work with some day – why? • Who do you admire most in the whole world? Why? • What is your favorite thing to do?
