  2. Background • Women’s status began to change after WWII as the played a more influential role in society • Even though women have continuously challenged the subordination to men they have not received equal rights • In any work field women earn less than men for the same job

  3. Feminism & Equal Rights • After more women went to work they protested discrimination • 1960s protests became feminist movement • Also protested for the control over their won bodies and reproductive systems • US Civil Rights Act of 1964

  4. Gender Equality in China • Socialist and communist transform legal systems to ensure gender equality • Mao Zedong: “Women hold up half the sky” • Pass law to ensure equality of women • Many were able to enter most professions

  5. Domesticity and Abuse • In other areas of the world women are expected to stay at home • Since some are always at home they have high illiteracy rates • Husbands who are “unsatisfied” with their wives in India and south Asia would burn them to death

  6. Women Leaders • Some women have been able exert their power in political offices or other leadership positions • Indira Gandhi was part of south Asia’s quest to elevate women • Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga • SuuKyi
