  2. Promoting youth employment: creating jobs for a more sustainable future Richie Wang (Chair) Social, Humanitarian and Cultural

  3. General Overview: More jobs and a brighter tomorrow • In 2012, there are 12 million people unemployed and mostly it is caused by the 2008 economical crisis. • With more people on the market looking for jobs, it is even harder for the youth to stand out from the ones that have experience.

  4. Definition of Key Terms: Unemployment: A situation which exists when members of the labor force wish to work at the prevailing wage or salary rates for their skills, but cannot get a job. Unemployment Rates: The percentage of people in a certain country to be unemployed. Benefits: Money provided by the government to relive the claimant.

  5. More key Terms: Economic Crisis: depression: a long-term economic state characterized by unemployment and low prices and low levels of trade and investment. Bankrupt: Having legally declared insolvent. ILO: The International Labors Office, taking place in Geneva and has resolutions regarding creating a sustainable future.

  6. Involvement of Organizations • The ILO and YEN has been working closely together to battle against unemployment. • YEN is the Youth Employment Network and the ILO stands for the International Labors Office. • In addition to these two organizations, twelve countries have been working to battle youth employment also.

  7. Timeline • 2000 – UN Secretary- General proposes the Youth Employment Network to help teens find jobs. • 2001 – The Secretary-General appointed twelve experts, a resolution was drafted and he encourages all member states to be prepared. • 2002 – The Youth Employment Network (YEN) is established, hosted by the ILO in Geneva. Indonesia, Namibia, and Sri Lanka become lead YEN countries. • 2005 – ILO meets together to draft its first resolution about youth employment • 2006 – 17 Countries join YEN and commit to a better future. • 2009 – The Global Jobs pact is signed to protect the vulnerable, including the youth. • 2012 – ILO drafts another resolution about youth employment, and looks at the actions taken.

  8. UN Involvement The United Nations has not specifically involved in youth employment. However, the United Nations first proposed the establishment of the YEN organization. The United Nations also helped with the Global Jobs Pact, which protects the rights of women, men, and the youth.

  9. Possible Solutions There are many ways for countries to help the youth to find jobs. But many ways are unpractical on a large scale and extremely difficult to fund. • One possibility is for the youth to have something different from the others. For example, a trait that only a small percentage of people possesses. • Another is for governments to guide the youth to jobs that are prepared for them. Then after college, they work in a job for them and secures their position.
