  2. Geography • an island northwest of Europe • largest European island but the ninth largest in the world • Britain’s population was about 60 million in 2009 • surrounded by over 1,000 smaller islands • largest city and capitol of Britain is London

British Families • Men and women are at equality in the household • 66% of marriages in the UK end in divorce, which is the highest rate in Europe • 24% of children grow up in single-parent families • The average number of children in a British family is 1.8, American is 3 • Average British child doesn’t move out until 30 • British families have become less stable and more diverse

Funeral Practices • Begin with official declaration of death and small attentions to body itself (closing eyes and covering face) • Ancient practices: undressing/washing the body, plugging it’s orifices, placing coins on eyelids to keep orifices closed • Customary to have a “funeral feast” after the funeral • 1900, less than 1% of bodies were cremated; today the figure is over 70%

  5. Wedding Traditions • Before the wedding, the bride has a Hen party and the bridegroom has a Stag party • Groom chooses a Best Man who is to look after the couples' rings during the marriage ceremony
