Strategic Defense Initiative • Proposed by Reagan on March 23, 1983 • Allowed use of ground and space based systems to protect the United States from attack by Strategic Nuclear Ballistic Missiles. • Focused on defense, opposed to previous strategic offense doctrine; Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD)

  3. SDIO • Strategic Defense Initiative Organization • Established 1984 • Leader: Lt. General James Alan Abrahamson • Is an organization within the United States Department of Defense

Star Wars • Strategic Defense Initiative was referred to as “Star Wars” after the famous George Lucas series. • 1987- American Physical Society concluded “Star Wars” was impossible due to lack of technological knowledge, and that it would take at least another 10 years alone to find out what would be feasible
