  1. Globalisation and Business • Globalisation • Green growth and Sustainable Development • Employers Employees and trade unions • HWK – Find out details of Edward Snowdon and youtube David Icke (optional)

  2. New World Order • Globalisation and free trade is immoral because international trade is controlled by elite group of global ‘agenda setters’ for their own profit and gain (not free). Individuals are puppets to global organisations such as World Bank, WTO and IMF. Some believe this controlling elite is known as the Bilderberg group. • Intellect and genuine scholar here is Noam Chomsky. Conspiracy theorist to quote is Alex Jones. Extremist is David Icke.

  3. Key Terms • Globalisation – Organisations operate on an international scale. Multi-lateral trade, movement of labour, shared currency, world organisations, TNCs • Globalism – view of the world as global not national or local. • Is this too far? Should we still have a sense of being a British person or Bournemouthian or are we all global citizens?

  4. Globalisation and Business • Is ‘green growth’ possible (global economic growth with no long term damage to environment)? • Kuznets Curve (1991). Grossman/Krueger suggested emerging economies damage early on but as people become wealthy, the become environmentally aware, recycle etc. Endorsed by World Bank. • Pearce/Barbier (2000) developed principle of sustainability. Is this idea achievable?

  5. Sustainable Development • Eric Neumayer (2010) – indicators that multinational companies can use to assess sustainability of their business. • 1 – National Accounts – whether something will be profitable. • 2 – Aggregate Welfare – Sustainable in that it adds to welfare of maximal number of people. • 3 – Natural Capital – Developments have sum benefit over damage to the environment. • 4 – Ecosystem health – Ecosystem of relevant area remains healthy. • 5 – Human-Environment Interaction – does it benefit local people and their relationship with environment? • Do you agree? Is this possible? Any issues?

  6. Employers and Employees • Balance between rights and interests of workers and the needs of the company (employees as key stakeholders). • Question – List some possible employee rights…

  7. Employers and Employees • Should British citizens get preference over migrant workers? • Utilitarianism – no as it is about maximum benefit… • Virtue ethicist – maybe not as seeing migrants as different might not lead to virtuous traits. • Christianity – champions hospitality and respect for foreigners.

  8. Employers and Employees • Workers rights – trade unions (a group formed to protect interests of their profession/members). • Should this be a legal right? Should employees have a legal right to strike? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uif_DoWvWnA

Global Employees • Do you agree that the ALL workers should get the following… • Global minimum wage • Minimum notice period • Maximum working hours • Minimum standard of working conditions • Right to be in a trade union • Equality of employment opportunity • Right to protest • Locally applicable pay and conditions • Paid maternity/paternity/compassionate leave • Minimum holiday (paid)
