  1. Vector Addition 1. The current in a river runs from east to west at a speed of 5 m/s. You are trying to swim across the river heading south at 2 m/s. What is your resultant velocity? Solve mathematically (Pythagorean theorem and Trig). Make sure to include an angle and direction.

  2. Vector Addition • Bobby and Joey are pushing on a box. Bobby pushes north on the box with a force of 12 N. Joey pushes west on the box with a force of 8 N. What is the resultant force? Solve graphically, make sure to include a scale and an angle. What is the equalibriant?

  3. Newton’s Laws • A car hits a bug with a force of 12 N. If the bug’s mass is 0.012 kg and the car’s mass is 1,000 kg: With what force does the bug hit the car with? What is the bug’s acceleration? What is the car’s acceleration?

  5. Angles • A girl pulls a 10 kg wagon at a constant speed over a horizontal surface. If she holds the handle of the wagon at an angle of 30o to the horizontal and pulls with an applied force of 10 N, determine the following: -Draw a free body diagram for the wagon -What is the wagon’s weight? Mass? Inertia? -What is the component of the applied force parallel to the ground? -What is the component of the force perpendicular to the ground? -Write a net force equation for the vertical direction and solve for the normal force.

  6. Angles 2. A box weighing 20 N sits on a hill that has a 40o slope. -Draw a free body diagram for the box -Determine the components of the force of gravity that is parallel to the surface and perpendicular to the surface -If the box is at rest, what is the force of friction and the normal force.

  7. Friction 1. Place the block of wood on top of the wood plank in front of you. Now, place the 1kg mass on top of the block of wood. Attach the force gauge to the block of wood. Now, pull the block of wood across the plank at a constant speed and observe the reading on the force gauge. -Draw a free body diagram for your experiment. -Write a net force equation in the x and y direction. -Solve for the force of friction and the normal force. -Compute the coefficient of friction for your block. Compare your value to the accepted value. -What are some reasons for your error?

  8. Friction 2. A 20 kg piece of copper is sitting on a piece of steel. -What is the maximum force you can push on the copper with and have it not move? -Once the copper begins to move, with what force do you have to push with to keep it moving at a constant speed?

  9. Challenge Question (Bonus) Prove that the following object is in equilibrium (saying that the object is at rest is not enough, you must show me using net force equations or with scaled diagrams)
