  2. What is pyromania? • Definition: An impulse-control disorder in which people can not restrain themselves from acting on strong and compelling urges of intense desire to prepare, set, and watch fires

  3. Associated Features • Experience intense pleasure and relief while next to fire. • Urges to start fire is irresistible. • Interested in anything that is fire related.(ex: firefighter) • Normally have more than one disorder. (antisocial personality disorder, chronic depression, & mental retardation)

  4. Associated Features • DSM-IV-TR: Deliberate and purposeful fire setting on more than one occasion • Tension or affective arousal before the act • Fascination with interest in curiosity about, or attraction to fire and its situational contacts. • Pleasure , gratification, or relief when setting fires or when witnessing or participating in their aftermath. • The fire setting is not done for monetary gain or for any type of political reason or any personal vendetta • The fire setting is not better accounted for by conduct disorder, or manic episodes

  5. Etiology • Past history alcohol dependence and/or abuse. • Childhood neglect since their early years mainly due to the reason of negligence coming from their parents

  6. Treatment • Primary treatment is prevention. • They offer a variety of therapy: based on behavioral, cognitive, & psycho-dynamic therapy. • Some in-take anti-depressants. • Community outreach program to teach dangers of fires.(fire safety)

  7. Prevalence • Pyromania is apparently rare. • Major problem in children and teens.(over for 40% of arrests due to “fire- related cases” are under the age of 18 years old. • More common in males( more commonly men with poor social skills and learning difficulties.)

  8. Prognosis • The prognosis for recovery in children who suffer from pyromania depends on the environmental or individual factors involved, but is generally positive. • In adults, the recovery rate is generally poor. • If an adult does recover, it usually takes a longer period of time
