  2. Colosse • Town in Asia Minor • Church threatened by false teaching • Christ is sufficient • Legal Standing Changed (1:22) • We Are Made New (2:11-13)

  3. CHURCH • Church is a new type of humanity • Outposts of heaven; a new type of culture • Matthew 5:14-16 • We must change to reflect who we are

  4. New Clothing • We are God’s chosen people • We are God’s holy people • We are God’s dearly loved people

  5. New Clothing • Compassion— “bowels of compassion” • Bowels were looked at as seat or center of our emotions • It relates to feelings of mercy and compassion

  6. New Clothing • Compassion • Mercy when not deserved (Mt. 18:25-27) • Mercy and tender concern for lost and hurting (Mt. 9:36-37)

  7. New Clothing • Kindness– Included in the nine-fold description of the fruit of the Spirit • Ps. 34:8 • We are to grow to be genuinely kind in nature

  8. New Clothing • Humility • In ancient world seen as weakness • Jesus showed us the power of humility

  9. New Clothing • Gentleness—closely related to humility • Not spinelessness but willingness to suffer a wrong and still wish the good of the other person (Numbers 12:1 ff) • Galatians 6:1

  10. New Clothing • Patience • Makrothumia • We put up with exasperating conduct • We bear with each other’s idiosyncrasies
