  1. Appearance Based on the books Dress Your Best and The 5 Minute Face

  2. What is appearance? Appearance is the way you look on the outside. The way you look says a lot about the person you are on the inside. That is why you always want to put your best foot forward when you are first meeting someone. What do you normally wear to a job interview? What kind of make-up would you have on? How about for a first date? Think about what you wore the first day of school…what did it say about you?

  3. Shopping!! Part of what makes us unique is what makes standardized sizing so difficult- we come in all different shapes and sizes and it is not determined by a number on a label. But recognizing this fact and accepting it is the first step in learning to make your clothes work for your body instead of feeling like it’s your body that doesn’t fit. The key to looking your best is creating a balanced body shape through clothing. Who do you think the “ideal” body proportion couple would be?

  4. Absolute musts when shopping • Dress your body the way it is now. • Goals are good but you have to dress for the present not for the future. • Tapered Jeans • No one looks good in them so just boycott them • Tailoring • Get use to the idea that we are not all the same body type and altering may need to happen. The nice thing is that by learning how to sew some of these things you will be able to do on your own. • Quality over Quantity

  5. Essentials for Every Woman In the book there is a list of items that every woman should have. I would list them all but there is a lot so if you would like to see it let me know Moving on to the different body types…I am going to go through the basic sizes but if you want to go more into height let me know.

  6. Bigger on Top Don’t- accentuate that narrowness of your lower half by wearing very narrow pants or skirts. You just create even more disproportion between your top and bottom halves. Do- create an overall streamlined look by adding a bit of volume (not bulk)to your lower half. Must-haves- Good chest support and an A-line skirt that falls below the knee.

  7. Bigger on the Bottom Don’t- wear tops that are too long and cover your tush. You will only shorten your legs. Do- look for tops that have structure, give you a waistline, and sit above the hip. Must-haves- A pair of pants that sit at the top of the hip.

  8. A Little Extra in the Middle Don’t- accentuate your thinner legs with skinny pants and skirts. Your top half will look even larger by comparison. Do- look for tops with structure and bottoms with a little bit of volume to help proportion a midsection. Must-haves- a jacket that doesn’t close above the natural waistline.

  9. Curvy Don’t- attempt to wear super-low-rise items. They will accent your hips and give you love handles Do- look for items that follow your natural curves and accent the narrowness of your waistline Must-haves- a wrap that accents the waist but does not cling to it.

  10. Not Curvy Don’t-attempt to wear clothing that doesn’t fit your chest or tush. You’ll look like you are playing dress-up. Do- go for clingier clothes such as knitwear and boy-cut pants that help create curves. Must-haves-Halter tops, backless dresses…you can pull this off without it feeling vulgar.

  11. Extra Curvy Don’t- go for too much ruffle and frill. While some embellishment on clothing is nice, don’t go for things that add weight to the look of your frame. No loosey-goosey drapy fabrics; they have no shape and neither will you. Do- look for clothing with clean lines and flattering seaming. Look for stiffer fabrics that have structure. Must-haves-a structure leather or other stiff material jacket that sits at the top of the hip.

  12. Universal Tidbits for Women • Contrast edging in small doses can pull focus away from problem areas, just don’t get too much. • You don’t have to match your bag to your shoes and on a black and white outfit, do one accessory that really pops! • A kitten heel works for people without cankles. • Animal prints can be tricky. They can either make you look as sleek as a leopard or as mangy as a junkyard dog. • Three quarter sleeves can make taller women look as if they’ve outgrown their clothes…try rolling them up to the elbow

  13. Universal Tidbits for Women • When wearing black and white for evening, try clear jewelry! Clear stones are eternally chic and don’t compete with the bold contrast of black and white. • Don’t worry about the length of the jean…if they fit get them and then have them hemmed!! • Red and black can make you look matronly so add a third color. • Try chocolate brown, navy, or charcoal gray. They’re all still dark and they’re just as slimming as black. • Pants should not pull or crease…if they do, put them back!

  14. Universal Tidbits for Women • If you’ve got pale skin, go with a lighter colors; darker skin, go brighter. • Button up shirts and jackets are meant to do that…if they pull don’t get them. If they slightly do but the rest of the shirt fits you can sew in Velcro or snaps. • When trying to detract from the midsection, think about wearing your hair up, add some chandelier earrings, and lengthen your neckline. • Accessories are a girls best friend….top 5 picks: brooches, bangle bracelets, multi chain necklaces, cocktail rings, chandelier earrings

  15. Universal Tidbits for Women • Layering gives depth to an outfit and helps it to look more polished. • Look for accessories that are proportionate to your size…smaller lady, smaller bag. • For all brunettes with pale skin…invest in the color emerald!! Lighter and pinker skin tones are best flattered by colors with bluish undertones. • When you find your favorite cut of jean, buy more than one pair. Have one hemmed to wear with heels and the other with flats.

  16. Universal Tidbits for Women • Oodles of accessories are unnecessary when there is so much going on in an outfit. • Its fine to mix patterns as long as they aren’t all competing for attention. • Beware of big accessories when wearing big prints. The print is the focus here. Don’t add too much on top of it.

  17. As for the boys… There is also a section on the essential items for guys… once again if you would like to see it let me know. Since guys body types aren’t as varied as women, we will cover the things that will help out certain types.

  18. Men #1 Short- Make yourself look longer, eliminate excess fabric and pay close attention to the way clothes fit. Create a streamlined silhouette. Average- This is the easiest to dress. Add items to make the whole ensemble pop. Tall- Avoid looking gangly. Bold stripes especially across the chest make your chest wider. Midwidth pant. Athletic- This is the ideal body type but dressing it is hard. The trick is to wear fabrics that cling to the body and find a good tailor to take in the mid-section of shirts.

  19. Men #2 Small-Framed- If you have a narrow frame don’t feel ashamed that you may have to wear a small and medium…it will make you look bigger if you dress the right size. Barrel- Chested- Play up the larger chest and shoulders and don’t bring too much attention to your midsection. Tummy- Create balance throughout the rest of the body with stronger shoulders and wider legs. Hips- Adding more emphasis to the upper torso.

  20. Universal Tidbits for Men • When mixing stripes, let one be the focus and let another play a supporting role to prevent clashing. • If you’re short cuff’s at the bottom with shorten the leg’s appearance- especially when they’re a contrasting color. • When mixing neutrals, like shades of brown and gray, add a pop of color. • Match your socks to your pants, not your shoe. Except when you’re wearing jeans. Then you can match the sock to the shoe.

  21. Universal Tidbits for Men • There’s a commonly held belief that you can’t mix black with brown…Wrong! When it comes to clothing, not accessories, these neutrals work as well in combination as any others. • When choosing sunglass frames, look for shapes that are the opposite of your face shape. • When tying your tie, aim for the top of your belt, especially when you want to show off the buckle. In general, shorter is chicer than longer. • By keeping a couple of buttons open at the neck, you bring more attention up toward your winning smile.

  22. Conclusion Make the best of what you got. You really needn’t have the perfect body to feel gorgeous and stylish. Feel free to come up with your personal style but just make sure it compliments your body type!!!

  23. Books Turn to page 167 in the book. You will find a chart explaining what colors you will look best in….

  29. Important Makeup tips • NEVER EVER share eyeliners, mascara or lip products…pink eye and cold sores spread easily. • Chill out with the tweezers…you shouldn’t have to draw them in. • Don’t spend tons of money on your makeup till you are sure you have found the color that you love. • Save your skin now while you are young…sunscreen is a must!! Make a habit of it now to save your skin as you get older. • Drink lots of water to deal with puffy eyes…also cold cucumbers help.

  30. Assignment Today you are going to create a poster entitled “My Fashion Style” You will receive a piece of cardstock. At the top write the title of the project…make it decorative. Using the magazines in the back make a collage of the things you would look good in and things you like. You may only use things that you would wear, like…make-up, purses, bracelets, rings, clothes, shoes, etc.

  31. Assignment Cont. You are not allowed to use any words…..no designer names or labels. The entire page needs to be filled so in order to do this cut out colors, designs, and textures you like.
