  4. Content v. Language Objective • Content – what students are learning • Students will explain how the internment of Japanese-Americans affected the U.S. home front during World War II. • Language – how students will process the content (think about, understand, recall, write, verbalize, etc.) • Students will use the writing process to create a paragraph with identifiable main ideas and supporting details.

  5. Preparing Language Objectives for SIOP Lessons • Use ELL objectives • Consider the “average” ELL student in the class • Adjust for beginning and advanced students • Use measurable objectives

  7. Key Vocabulary • Determine key technical vocabulary, concept words and other words needed to read or write about the topic and teach these words. Give students the opportunity to practice using them. • Names of important people and places • Sequential words • Prefixes & suffixes

  8. Language Functions • Consider the language functions students will learn in the lesson and teach/reinforce the function. • Define • Argue • Classify • Compare • Summarize

  9. Language Skills • Decide what language skills are needed to accomplish the lesson’s activities and provide explicit instruction in the skills or review the skills. • Reading for main ideas • Listening and giving an opinion • Edit sentences about the topic

  10. Language Learning Strategies • Explore possible language learning strategies to share in the lesson. • Cognates • Preview using illustrations/graphs/tables • Note-taking
