  1. Adding and Subtracting Integers • To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values and then change the sign to the sign of the addends. • Positive if both integers are positive • Negative if both integers are negative addend addend addend -8 + (-4) = -12 8 + 4 = 12 addend

  2. Adding and Subtracting Integers • To add integers with different signs, subtract their absolute values. The sum is: • Positive if the positive integer’s absolute value is greater • Negative if the negative integer’s absolute value is greater. 8 + (-4) = 4 -8 + 4 = -4 Additive Inverse Property The sum of any number and its additive inverse or opposite is 0 4 + (-4) = 0

  3. Adding and Subtracting Integers • To subtract an integer, add its opposite. 4 -9 is the same as 4 + (-9) When you subtract 9, it is the same as adding -9 4 -9 = -5 7 – (-10) is the same as 7 + 10. When you subtract - 10 it is the same as adding 10. EX: -22-26 is the same as -22 + (-26) Subtracting a positive 26 is the same as adding a negative 26. So, -22-26 = -48

  4. Multiplying and Dividing Integers The Commutative Property of Multiplication states that you can multiply in any order. So 4 (-3) = -3(4) Multiply/Divide Integers with Different Signs The product/quotient of two integers with different signs is negative. 6(-4) = -24 24/-6 = -4 Multiply/Divide Integers with the Same Sign The product/quotient of two integers with the same sign is positive -9 (-3) = 27 9 (3) = 27 -27/-3 = 9
