Common Errors • Basic MLA issues w/formatting • No extra space btwn ¶’s • No contractions, you/your • Missing: header w/last name and page # • Missing: Lead-ins!!! All quotes need lead-ins.
Punctuation Issues • All articles within ( ) citations need to have quotes around them. And shorten the title if it’s too long. • When you are NOT doing ( ) citations, the , or the . needs to be INSIDE the quotes: - “I need a laser beam.” - is an “epic battle,” and it shows. • The italics or quotes from the Works Cited entry should match the ( ) doc. For example: quote ends here” (“Article”).
Works Cited/Parenthetical Doc Issues • Always put author’s name if there is one, otherwise use a shortened, yet unique version of the article title. You do not have to put the ENTIRE article title b/c I can find it on the Works Cited page and hopefully get it • Be sure I can tell which article you mean when the titles are very similar. Choose an obvious key word from the title when there are similarities. • Because there are so many ( ) doc citations w/o page #’s, you will need to put the article title every time, rather than just when you switch sources so that I can tell what’s data and what’s analysis
Content Issues • Be sure your topic sentences are focused enough and actually reflect the data/quotes in your paragraph • Do not put a quote in your TS • Be sure your commentary/analysis actually comments on the data and draws conclusions from it. I’m seeing lots of superficial cm’s and quotes • Watch the ratio. Too much CM can be a problem too.
Next steps… • Continue working on the My Ideas section on your notecards • Revisit what you’ve written, look at the mistakes you need to fix and make a plan for how you’re going to do this. Do you need to visit me? Ms. Bozzani? Ms. Omae? • Edit/revise these first pages as necessary and get to work on the next two. All four, with your Works Cited, this graded draft, and an intro ¶ for context will be due ______________
