  1. Common Core 101 Bob Ehrhart September 26, 2013

  2. Presentation Overview • Starts with lofty goals • Origin of Common Core • What's happening nationally • Common Core implications in Virginia

  3. Presentation Purpose • Educate citizens on Common Core State Standards • Identify Longitudinal Data System Usage • Encourage citizens to oppose adoption of CCSS • Encourage citizens to protect student privacy

  4. What are Common Core State Standards? • Learning standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math • “Next Generation” science standards • National Council of Social Studies Aligned with CCSS

  5. What is the origin/history of CCSS? • National Governors Association & Chief Council of States Officers form the CCCS Initiative • In Spring 2009, all but 2 governors & 2 state superintendents signed a Memorandum of Agreement. • The public and interested organizations were SHUT OUT from the process.

  6. What is the origin/history of CCSS? • With support from the Gates Foundation & private [publishing ] companies, the final standards were issued in June 2010. • USDOE coerced states to accept CCSS in return for: • grants like Race to the Top and • waivers of No Child left Behind requirements

  7. Current Nationwide Implementation www.truthinamericaneducation.com

  8. What are the Common Core Goals • Improve K-12 Curriculum • Make all students college or career ready • Ensure computer and instructional-reading literacy • Emphasize critical thinking by using real-life info • Encourage global citizenship

  9. Ideally How Common Core Works Video courtesy of DC Pubic Schools (3 mins)

  10. What is the Reality of Common Core • Becomes a “1 size fits all approach” • Prevents Rapid Discard of Failed Methods • Encourages Regimentation of Teachers • Promotes multi-culturalism in both English & Math VS Multicultural Salad Bowl One nation under God JaneHoganJun 2013

  11. Marco Rubio Quote • "Common Core started out as a well-intentioned effort to develop more rigorous curriculum standards, However, it is increasingly being used by the Obama Administration to turn the Department of Education into what is effectively a national school board." • July 27, 2013 from the Tampa Bay Times

  12. Teacher Sentiment http://www.badassteacher.org/index.html

  13. Massachusetts More Info: http://secondary-education.yoexpert.com/issues-in-education/how-do-united-states-students-compare-to-students-903.html

  14. How Do CCSS compare with MA Massachusetts’ success was built upon a relentless focus on academics, specifically on literacy, math, and the liberal arts. Common Core emphasizes experiential, skills-based learning while reducing the amount of classic literature, poetry, and drama taught in English classes.

  15. How Do CCSS compare with MA (cont.) The impact on English classrooms in MA, which adopted Common Core in 2010, has been to reduce the amount of classical literature (Dickens, Twain, etc.) studied by more than half. One major practical effect is that most American students will not get to Algebra I in eighth grade, which is critical if our students are to be college-ready in mathematics. More Info: http://pioneerinstitute.org/download/one-page-primer-on-common-core-quality/

  16. Rather than learn from leading states like MA, Common Core draws from the so-called “21st century skills” movement, which elevates soft skills like: • global awareness, • media literacy, • cross-cultural flexibility and adaptability, • and creativity to an equal footing with academic content .

  17. Real Life Common Core Example Grade 12 Shakespeare Twelfth Night Grade 3 Multiplication – Division. What they think about number patterns JaneHoganJun 2013

  18. Real Life Common Core Example #2 • English (ELA) Core Lesson in History, New York • Gettysburg Address • What does "4 score and 7 years ago" mean? • What does "so conceived and so dedicated" mean? • What if he had used "start" instead of "conceive"? • What are the 4 ideas at the end for people to follow? JaneHoganJun 2013

  19. This is information extraction • No real knowledge of history, of why these dead should not have died in vain. • No appreciation of our American heritage

  20. What happens if CCCS are adopted? • Standards would replace existing State standards (i.e. SOL). • Control of educational standards is taken from parents, school districts, and States. • Control of educational standards is GIVEN to the Federal government • https://www.box.com/shared/t1ykvgr99mha82eokykk

  21. State Data Collection System • Does every state have a data collection system that tracks students through their lives?  • Yes! Governor Kaine excepted this as a condition for receiving State Fiscal Stabilization Funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act . To learn more: http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/state.asp?stateabbr=VA

  22. VA Longitudinal Data System http://www.doe.virginia.gov/info_management/longitudinal_data_system/index.shtml http://www.doe.virginia.gov/info_management/longitudinal_data_system/vlds_information.pdf https://www.facebook.com/pages/Eye-on-Virginia-Education/531736136879594

  23. State Longitudinal Data System (SLDS) • If VA already has a data collection system, what's the big deal w/ the SLDS requirement in Common Core? • The SLDS goes beyond the data collection currently done by VA. For more information on the NCES model: http://nces.ed.gov/forum/datamodel/information/aboutThe.aspx

  24. Data Collection System Video courtesy of Project Constitution (~ 130 secs)

  25. State Longitudinal Data System (SLDS) • What type of information does the Federal government require through the SLDS? • The SLDS would require over 400 data points including a student’s activity (such as archery) and specific religious affiliation! For more information on SLDS: http://nces.ed.gov/forum/datamodel/eiebrowser/techview.aspx?instance=studentElementarySecondary • http://nces.ed.gov/forum/datamodel/eiebrowser/techview.aspx?instance=religiousAffiliation

  26. Summary of Education in Virginia • Refused to adopt 2010; Request & Received waiver for NCLB • SOL's superior to CCSS; yet learning is "Fully Aligned". • SOL's are more rigorous in both English and Math • VADOE does not force lessons and methods on Localities • VA does not participate in USDOE-funded PARCC

  27. Education Actions in Virginia • The Board of Education included content in the 2010 English SOL Curriculum Framework and adopted a supplement to the 2009 Mathematics SOL Curriculum Framework to fully align Virginia’s standards with the Common Core For more information: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/common_core/index.shtml

  28. (Good) Local Autonomy and Parental Input Superintendents can force CCSS on teachers 13 Local School Districts have taken Federal $ Social Studies taught in English Classes Too much teamwork = loss of individuality Too much "instructional" reading???

  29. What about costs? Implementation costs (i.e. get this curriculum into schools) is estimated to be $16 BILLION. Of which, 90% would be paid for by state and local tax payer revenue. • For more Info: • http://pioneerinstitute.org/education/study-estimates-cost-of-transition-to-national-education-standards-at-16-billion/ Are you not “Taxed Enough Already”?

  30. Martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1906-1945 "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak Not to act is to act." WHAT WILL YOUDO? JaneHoganJun2013
