  2. Fact or Fiction • People with low self-esteem are more likely to abuse drugs than people with high self-esteem? True • People who abuse drugs are unaware of the hazards the drugs present? False • A physical addiction is more powerful than a psychological one. False • Smoking Marijuana is more damaging to the lungs than smoking tobacco. True • People usually recover from drug dependence on their own. False

  3. What is drug abuse? • Drug abuse is the taking of a drug for a non-medical purpose and in a manner that can damage a person’s health or ability to function. ALL drugs can be abused! Recreational drug use is a users term for abusing the drug.

Why do people abuse drugs? • A person’s physical or genetic nature determines why they abuse drugs. • Personality traits can play a role in a person’s decision to use or not use drugs. • Peer Pressure • Personal Values • People who focus on themselves is more likely to abuse drugs than other people are more likely to abuse drugs. • Self-esteem

  5. Consequences from Society • Media portrays drug use as popular and trendy • Education is not sufficient to educate people about the dangers • Jail time is different in all states • $$$$$$$$$$$$ is the driving force for dealing drugs

  6. Addiction • Drug addiction is also called dependence. People do not start out using drugs to become an addict. • Addiction is a very powerful and dangerous state to be in. It can consume all of your days and all of your money.

  7. Drugs and the Brain • Endorphins are the chemicals in the brain that produce pleasure. • The lack of this chemical is called dysphoria. It is an unpleasant feeling for the brain. • The taking of mind-altering drugs produces pleasure directly in the brain with no healthful activity associated with it. • The brain of a drug taker produces less and less of this chemical which causes the drug taker to take more drugs.

  8. Physical Addiction • The body’s chemistry actually changes. The body must have the drug, not for pleasure but for functionality. • If the body does not receive the drug it will go through withdrawals. • Withdrawals include- problems with vision, muscle activity, digestion, brain function, temperature regulation, and sometimes can lead to urgent need for the drug.

  9. Psychological Addiction • A strong MENTAL craving for drugs. • Can occur without a physical addiction. • More powerful than a physical addiction. • The only way to escape drug addiction is to never experiment with the drug.

  10. Commonly Abused Drugs • Marijuana • Amphetamines • Cocaine • Sedatives and Barbiturates • Opiates • Hallucinogens • Inhalants • Designer Drugs

  11. Marijuana • THC is the chemical that is considered a drug. • Stores in the fatty cells of the body • Will stay in your system for up to 30 days • Gateway drug

  12. Amphetamines Known as speed to many users Also known as a stimulant Often prescribed for weight loss Short lived high Tend to make the user think they have super powers

  13. Cocaine Comes from the Coca bush Methods of use- chewed, snorted, injected or smoked Short lived burst of Euphoria Over 1 million are addicted

  14. Sedatives and Barbiturates Slow down the body systems Often used as a sleep agent Barbiturates slow down the CNS Long term abuse can cause depression, forgetfulness, reduced sex drive, and addiction

  15. Come from the opium poppy Relieve pain and cause sleepiness Name of opiates: Codeine, Opium, Morphine, and Heroin Heroin is the most abused drug in the US Injected, snorted, or smoked Opiates

  16. Hallucinogens Produces vivid visions, sounds, smells, and sensations LSD, Peyote, PCP, Mescaline, Mushrooms

  17. Inhalants Three types of chemicals are used to produce a high… Solvents- gasoline, glue, lighter fluid Propellants- paint, deodorant, hair spray, whipped cream, and oil Medical gasses- Nitrous Oxide, Ether, Chlorophorm

  18. Designer Drugs Laboratory-made Drugs that look like illegal drug Ecstasy- like another form of methamphetamines Fentanyl- used in surgery but used illegally as synthetic heroin Currently a legal drug due to the chemical make-up of the drugs

  19. Drugs and Driving • All drugs will impair the users driving • Just because a drug speeds up the CNS doesn’t mean that it will make a person a better driver • You will go to jail if you are driving impaired. Each state has its own laws

  20. How about you? • Do you miss the drug? • Are you experiencing withdrawal effects? • Are you aware of problems in your life? • Are you more tense or anxious than usual? • Are you feeling depressed? • Do you feel better without the drug? • Do you spend a lot of time thinking about the drug? • Do you make sure you can get the drug quickly?
