  4. 1796 map identified it as Grand Island • 1802 river guide refers to it as President’s Island • 1865 – served as camp for about 1,500 freed slaves • After the Civil War, Nathan Bedford Forrest established a penal farm to raise corn and cotton. The county paid 25¢ per prisoner per day

Presidents Island Today • 4th largest Inland Port in the United States • 173 industrial locations in the port • 3,000 to 4,000 employees • 54 facilities with harbor capabilities • 30,000 annual rail car movements • Employee base from Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee • 53 acre public facility • 7.1 Billion Annual Economic Impact • 16,765 jobs supported within Shelby County by port related operations.
