  2. Surface Area of a Cylinder • The formula: • Why does this formula work? • A cylinder has 2 different shapes: a rectangle and 2 circles. • The rectangle’s length is also the circumference of the circles. • The rectangle’s width is also the height of the cylinder. • Since a rectangle’s area is LxW, you’d multiply  x d for length and multiply that by the height of the cylinder (h). • Next, since there’s 2 circles, you’d multiply a circle’s area formula by 2. • Add these two amounts together. SA = dh+2r2

  3. Surface Area of Cylinders SA 175.84 + 100.48 SA3.14 x 8 x 7 + 2 x 3.14 x 42 The surface area is about 276.32 ft2. Course 1 Additional Example 1A: Finding the Surface Area of a Cylinder Find the surface area of the cylinder. SA = dh+2r2

  4. Surface Area of Cylinders SA 345.4 + 157 SA3.14 x 10 x 11 + 2 x 3.14 x 52 The surface area is about 502.4 ft2. Course 1 Additional Example 1B: Finding the Surface Area of a Cylinder SA = dh+2r2

  5. Surface Area of Cylinders h 9 __ __ 3 3 SA 395.64 + 307.72 SA3.14 x 14 x 9 + 2 x 3.14 x 72 r = + 4 r = + 4 = 7 The surface area is about 703.36 ft2. Course 1 Additional Example 1C: Finding the Surface Area of a Cylinder SA = dh+2r2
