Linwood School • About Us • We are a large generic all age special school • NOR 202 aged 4 – 19 years • Students come from a wide geographical area • Needs of students include: • PMLD, SLD, MLD, ASD, EBSD • Post 16 provision at Linwood currently for students with SLD, others leaving at 16 and going onto go on to local provision • For our MLD students this is usually an Entry level course at a local college.

Our MLD students typically leave Linwood with: • Entry level qualifications in Mathematics, English and Science • Level 1 BTEC Workskills qualifications. • Experience of the World of Work through in-school and external placements • A range of work skills – reliable, hardworking, conscientious • A positive attitude about the contributions they can make in the world of work

Background to the project • Wanting to provide Entry level learners with more choice at Post 16 • Awareness that young people with Entry level qualifications and MLD find it more difficult to access industry training and to secure a meaningful career • Wanting to provide the opportunity for meaningful training that could lead to a higher chance of employment for young people with MLD and help prevent NEETs from this client group • The rationale behind RPA provides the • opportunity for this to become a reality.

  5. The requirements • To be considered for the course learners will need to meet all of the following criteria: • Attend a mainstream or special school & have a statement of Special Needs that highlights moderate learning difficulties. • Have achieved at least Entry 2 in English and Maths. • Have already had a successful work experienceplacement. • Be able to travel independently.

  6. The Model Classroom in the Heart of Industry Industry Education Learning base situated within the host industry School staff and learners attend the host learning base each day during term time. Learners’ programme consists of functional skills, job coaching & ‘on the job’ training. • Learners benefit from: • expertise of industry and education staff • support from Community Employment Services as part of their training • opportunity to build on basic skills and gain industry specific experience and qualifications.

Worked example: Hospitality Hotel School Understands aims of project & willing to provide opportunities Promotes opportunity to appropriate learners & their parents Agrees to host & provide room for learning base Recruits staff as appropriate Liaison between school & hotel throughout the planning process Both school and hotel are involved in selection process, involving application and interview Successful students to start September 2013 ( 8 max)

Where we are now • Agreement in principle from a Hotel • Number of parents of Year 10s at Linwood have registered their interest for September 2013 • Timeline Action Plan established in preparation for September 2013 start • Possible opportunity to have a pilot start in September 2012 being actively explored

  11. The Future Industry specific qualifications + relevant training = best possible opportunities for MLD learners in the future..... This model could run successfully within a wide variety of industries
