History • The Institutes of Advanced Study are considered the third development in the history of universities: • the emergence of universities in the medieval period; • the emergence of research universities at the end of the 19C; • and now collaborative interdisciplinary research that interfaces with public need.

Consortium of Institutes of Advanced Study (UK)Mission Statement “Members of the Consortium are Research Institutes that take an active and co-ordinating role in promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and collaborative work at doctoral level and beyond, and offer an organisational structure and programme to foster these aims. Research Institutes are committed to enhancing public understanding of academic activity at the highest level.”

CIAS’s Remit • Enhanced visibility of IASs within universities, in the UK, and internationally • active participation as expert bodies in the formation of government and research council research policies • building research capacity across disciplinary boundaries and encouraging collaboration • promoting national and international visibility of the best current research in UK

CIAS’s Remit, Cont. • acting as a national advisory group in development of future policy regarding research across humanities, social and natural sciences, including medicine and engineering • effective networking and lobbying on shared matters of concern • development of proposals for collaborative and team research projects between IASs • collaboration between Institutes for visiting fellows, seminars, conferences, and shared research themes (pursuit of joint bids for funding) • sharing of resources and expertise publicising conferences, seminars and workshops across the group

EII’s mission • EII brokers research across Exeter’s distinct strengths in cultural, natural, and built environments with needs and opportunities in the public sphere and in collaboration with partner institutions • In addition to research projects and their public applications, EII facilitates interdisciplinary masters courses and Ph.D. supervision across disciplinary boundaries.

Interdisciplinarity: Migrations Network • 2005 34 staff across the University who worked on human migration • The Migrations Network brought geographers, economists, culturalists, historians and the rest together with politicians and media. • Today over 50 staff and research students on immigration policy and European, Kurdish, Palestinian, Romany, Cornish and other ancient and modern migrations. • 24 major Network research grants

EII provides • Cross-School research events and fora for intellectual activity, interdisciplinary environment • Facilitated grant collaborations and bids, across Exeter and with partner universities • Space for distinguished academic, business, and public visitors with activities built around them and personal attention

EII provides ii • Collaborative events receiving national and international media coverage. • Facilitation of knowledge transfer through internships and partnerships. • Training for staff to produce the public face of research • More space for research fellows on grants • A macro-community for research students and masters programmes
