  1. J.R.R Tolkein "Speaking of the history of stories and especially fairy stories, we may say that the Pot of Soup, the Cauldron of Story, has always been boiling and to it have been added new bits, dainty and undainty.  There are many things in the Cauldron, but the Cooks do not dip in the ladle quite blindly.  Their selection is important."

  2. How Do Archetypes Help Us Understand Literature? • Characterization and Symbolism • Jungian Analysis

  3. On the Note Card: • What are your observations about Creation Myths? If you were to map the archetypal plot pattern for Creation Stories what would it look like? (We did this last week with the Cinderella story)

  4. Carl Jung • Coined the term “Archetype” • Psychologist • The Jungian Self: • Ego • Shadow • Anima (female)/Animus (male) • An individual can only understand this quest to be whole through metaphor

  5. In Group One • Carefully read the creation stories you have been given • As a group, discuss the important details • Each individual should have a list of the important details in each story and be prepared to share those details with another group

  6. In Group Two • Share the details of the creation stories you read • Identify patterns in the stories—events, objects, characters, images, colors, etc. that appear in multiple stories • Be sure you have a specific example (phrase or passage) that illustrates how that element appears in each story
