Oceans. Essential Question How was the ocean formed?. How the oceans were formed. Volcanoes erupted and released gases. The gases cooled and formed into clouds. Then all of the clouds precipitated and formed a big ocean.

  1. Oceans Essential Question How was the ocean formed?

  2. How the oceans were formed • Volcanoes erupted and released gases. The gases cooled and formed into clouds. Then all of the clouds precipitated and formed a big ocean. • The way the five oceans were formed was because in continental drift the land divides the oceans to the Pacific, Atlantic, Southern, Indian, and Arctic.

  3. Surface Currents • Horizontal stream like movements of water near oceans. • Causes: • Global winds blowing across surface. • Coriolis effect • Continental deflection

  4. Ocean floor • This is the ocean floor in order: • Continental shelf • Continental slope • Continental Rise • Abyssal Plain • Mid ocean ridge • Ocean trenches • Seamount

  5. Salinity • Salinity Is the measured amount of dissolved solids in a given amount of liquid. • If you had a bowl of salt water and the water evaporated the salinity would increase.

  6. Waves • Waves rise and fall in one place. • White caps: Waves that form in open ocean during stormy weather. • Tsunami: A giant wave that forms after a volcanic eruption, earthquake or landslide.

  7. Question of the day - What is an Undertow? • A substance current near shore that pulls objects out to sea. If you go out to far the undertow can pull you down so fast that you wouldn’t be able to take a breath or even scream.
