  3. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? A. June 25, 1957 Union Of 2 Denominations: Evangelical and Reformed Church General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches I. HISTORY OF THE UCC B. Listed as ~ 5518 congregations with ~ 1.2 million members. C. “Pastor” - “Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.” - 12 Degrees, including a Master’s from the University of Chicago Divinity School & a Doctorate from the United Theological Seminary - From 87 members to 6000 (Since 1972).

  4. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? D. EXAMINING ITS HISTORY: 1. Started Too Late (Matt. 16:18; Mark 9:1; etc.)! 2. What of the seed principle (Luke 8:11)? I. HISTORY OF THE UCC 3. “Pastor” “Reverend” “Doctor”!!! (Acts 14:23; 20:17, 28) (Matt. 23:5-9; Ps. 111:19)

Associations of local churches, ordained ministers, etc. II. ORGANIZATION D. Conferences which include Associations and other local churches. E. General Synod. F. EXAMINING ITS ORGANIZATION: Do we read of this in the Bible? No!

Views “Apostle’s creed, Nicene creed, the Heidelberg Catechism, Augsburg Confession” & others as “valued in our church as authentic testimonies of faith”. III. TEACHINGS C. While teach some truth (God is 3 persons, Christ crucified and risen, “In essentials - unity, in nonessentials - diversity, in all things - charity”), Yet they teach many FALSE things too!

  7. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? D. Unity In Diversity! Emphasize “testimonies of faith rather than tests of faith”. 1. Test of faith - something that you draw lines of fellowship over (plan of salvation, proper worship, authority of Bible, etc.). III. TEACHINGS 2. Testimony of faith - personal perceptions and private interpretations. “Expressions of that unity are as diverse as there are individuals. The common thread that runs through all is love.” “...We are free to believe and act in accordance with our perception of God’s will for our lives.”

  8. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? E. “Covenant Relationships” 1. Bible Covenant = a binding agreement & relationship with our Lord (Heb. 8-13). 2. UCC Covenant = Recognizing churches, associations, conferences even if they disagree. III. TEACHINGS F. Pro-Homosexuality (Rom. 1:26-27)! 1. Gen. Assembly 1985 voted to accept. 2. Openly gay ministers. 3. LGBT (Lesb., Gay, Bi & Transgender Ministry).

  9. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? G. Women Pastors (1 Tim. 3:2; 2:9) 1. General Synod, 3 of 5 board members are women. 2. Two have title “reverend”. III. TEACHINGS H. Two “Sacraments” 1. Baptism an “Outward Sign” (cp. 1 Pet. 3:21). Sprinkle, pour, or immerse (cp. Rom. 6:1-4). Infants or adults (cp. Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). 2. Lord’s Supper - When the congregation wants to... (cp. Acts 20:7).

  10. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? I. God Still Speaks (cp. 1Cor. 13:8-13; Gal. 1:6-9). 1. Modern day prophecy. Bible not complete. “We believe that the UCC is called to be a prophetic church.” III. TEACHINGS “There is yet more light and truth to break forth from God’s holy word... It declares that the study of the scriptures is not limited by past interpretations, but it is pursued with the expectation of new insights and God’s help for living today.”

  11. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? J. Exalt Race (cp. Gal. 3:28)! “...called by God to be a congregation that is not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that does not apologize for its African roots!” III. TEACHINGS “We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain ‘true to our native land,’ the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. “

  12. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? K. Social Gospel (cp. Gal. 1:6-9; 1 Tim. 3:15)! Among its 70+ “Ministries”: ATHLETES FOR CHRIST - welcomes young men and women to build their physical strengths through participation in Christian sport activities. III. TEACHINGS CAREER DEVELOPMENT... DANCE MINISTRY - ...principles of modern dance, ballet, and interpretive dance. Drama Ministry, Drill Team, Girl Scouts, Healing Ministry, HIV/AIDS Ministry, Math Tutorial, Singles Community Ministry, Yoga Ministry, etc.!

  13. WHAT IS THETRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST? A. The Appearance of Growth (2 Pet. 2:2). B. The Path Of “Will Worship” (Col. 2:23; Mt. 15:9). C. Some Truth Is Not Enough (Acts 20:27). CONCLUSION: D. Why WE Call Ourselves The Lord’s Church! (Luke 8:11) “If any man speaks, let him speak as the word of God” (1 Pet. 4:11)
