  2. Peptide Building Blocks Peptide building blocks, also known as amino acid building blocks, are the individual components that makeup peptides and proteins. Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds, while proteins are larger chains of amino acids. Amino acids are organic compounds that contain an amino group (-NH2), a carboxyl group (-COOH), and a side chain or R-group. There are 20 commonly occurring amino acids that serve as the building blocks for peptides and proteins in living organisms. Each amino acid has a unique side chain, which gives it specific chemical properties.

  3. Peptide Building Blocks The 20 amino acids can be classified into different groups based on their side chains. These groups include: • Non-polar, aliphatic amino acids: Glycine, Alanine, Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Methionine, and Proline. • Aromatic amino acids: Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, and Tryptophan. • Polar, uncharged amino acids: Serine, Threonine, Cysteine, Asparagine, and Glutamine. • Positively charged (basic) amino acids: Lysine, Arginine, and Histidine. • Negatively charged (acidic) amino acids: Aspartic acid and Glutamic acid.
