  3. Review- The Constitutional Act - 1791 • Upper Canada is the area where most of the Loyalists moved  Along the Great Lakes • The people who live there are mostly English and Protestant

  4. Review-The Constitutional Act - 1791 • Lower Canada is the area where most of the French Canadians live Close to the St. Lawrence River • The people who live there are mostly French and Catholic • There are English people in Montreal, Quebec City and the Eastern Townships

  5. Government after 1791 • The people in Lower Canada voted for people to represent them • These people worked in the ASSEMBLY • The ASSEMBLY created new laws • However, the Governor and his council could block the laws or he can make his own • This was called the power of VETO

  6. Government after 1791 • The governor was friends with very rich English people • He made laws that helped them make money • Rich men that owned companies asked him to spend tax dollars that would help their companies

  7. Government after 1791 • Regular people became very mad because the governor was not listening to what they wanted • He was also spending their tax money on things that did not help them • A lawyer named Louis Joseph Papineauwanted to stand up to the government

  8. Louis Joseph Papineau • Louis Joseph Papineau became the leader of a group of people who disagreed with the government • This group was called “Les Patriotes”

  9. Les Patriotes • Les Patriotes were regular people who worked hard • They felt like the government wasn't treating them fairly • Les Patriotes wrote a letter to the Government in England demanding fair treatment • This letter was called the 92 Resolutions

  10. Lord Russell • A man named Lord Russellread the 92 Resolutions • He ignored them • He wrote a letter to Les Patriotes explaining that things would stay the same • This letter was called the Russell Resolutions

  11. The Rebellions • Les Patriotes were very upset • Upset with the government and Lord Russell • They tried to be peaceful • However, the Russell Resolutions – they organized a rebellion in 1837

  12. The Rebellions • Regular men joined the rebellion  farmers, doctors, blacksmiths, etc. • There were several battles all over Lower Canada • The rebellions lasted for 1 ½ years

  13. The largest battles were in: • St-Eustache • Beauharnois • Odeltown • St-Denis • St-Charles • Chambly

  14. End of the Rebellions • The British army in Lower Canada was too strong for Les Patriotes • The army defeated Les Patriotes • The British government captured several men who fought for Les Patriotes • The government executed 9 men to show Les Patriotes that this was serious

  15. Call in Lord Durham! • The British government wanted control over Lower Canada • They called in a man named Lord Durham • This man investigated why there were rebellions in Lower Canada

  16. Call in Lord Durham! • Lord Durham said these things: • The French in Lower Canada were not as smart as the English • They were only farmers • They should be assimilated! • English people should control the government and economy ($$$)
