Su cabeza, en forma de pala, tiene dos ojos y, a veces, tentáculos. La cola es puntiaguda. La boca está en la cara ventral, a menudo a más de medio camino hacia la cola. La mayoría de las especies miden 3–15 mm (0,1–0,6 pulg.) de largo; algunas se acercan a los 30 cm (1 pie).
