  1. Action Cancer Fundraising Pack A guide for Centra retailers School Action Programme Fighting Cancer Together

  2. Did you know? • Cancer affects one in three people in Northern Ireland. • One in four people will die from cancer. • Cancer is due to overtake heart disease as the number one killer in NI in five years. • NI has 8,500 new cancer cases yearly. • One in eleven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the course of a lifetime. • Nearly 500 men are diagnosed with prostrate and testicular cancer each year. • Many cancers can be successfully treated if detected early. • Screening may detect breast and cervical cancer at an early stage. Action Cancer Action Cancer is a local charity which depends on donations to continue with its work. This includes pioneering new initiatives, such as the mobile detection service, supporting NI researchers working in the field of cancer, and supporting the Northern Ireland Cancer Genetics Service, which operates at Belfast City Hospital and in the cancer units at regional hospitals. Action Cancer must raise £2 million every year to be able to continue to support families and individuals affected by cancer. It receives no government funding.

  3. The aim of the partnership between Centra and Action Cancer • More young people, and young women in particular, are taking up smoking. • It is difficult to get kids to eat those all-important 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables a day and to take regular exercise. • Action Cancer are promoting these healthy messages in schools across NI every day through its school programmes. A commitment has now been made by Musgrave SuperValu Centra to provide three year, long term support to Action Cancer in the delivery of this programme. • The school programme reaches an audience of 8000 secondary school children, and 6000 primary school children a year. • The programme currently visits approximately 150 to 200 schools per year, where the instructors give advice on eating, exercise, smoking cessation and care in the sun. • This is having an impact on young people, their families and the health of the community into the future. Centra stores are locally based and can help promote these healthy messages, saving lives in the future and impacting on families now. • Fundraising can be fun, and offers Centra staff and their customers the opportunity to play their part in supporting a local charity.

  4. Contacting Action Cancer If you would like to speak to someone in Action Cancer to discuss the School Action programmes, ring the number shown below and ask for Schools Administration. Action Cancer 1 Marlborough Park Belfast BT9 6XS Telephone: 028 90 80 33 44 Action Cancer Shops Encourage your staff and customers to donate good quality clothing and bric-a-brac to their local Action Cancer Shop. This will help the charity to raise substantial funds for its vital services.

  5. School Action Programme • Audience: Secondary school & education colleges. An extended range of School Action programmes for secondary schools and further education colleges is being launched for the new academic year and will include one off cancer prevention and healthy lifestyle sessions for both boys and girls from 11-18 years old. Aim: To heighten awareness of healthy living and early detection among secondary school & education colleges while applying a learning approach linked with the national curriculum. A qualified health promotion team are engaged by the charity to undertake the programme. On offer will be: • Single cancer prevention & healthy lifestyle sessions. These sessions cover strong, core messages on early detection and cancer prevention including the dangers of smoking and alcohol, the importance of exercise and a balanced diet. Information on the prevention and detection of testicular, breast, cervical and skin cancer will also be included. • Four sessions delivered weekly covering a range of health issues relating to cancer prevention • Smoking cessation programmes

  6. School Action Programme • The Wally & Wise Roadshow • Audience: Primary School boys and girls aged 3-11. • Aim: To heighten awareness of healthy living among primary school boys and girls while applying a learning approach linked with the national curriculum. • Puppeteer engaged by the charity to undertake a programme of visits. • The puppet show is an interactive show, whereby the children speak directly to the puppets. It operates on the principle that the children are already aware of what is good and bad for them, so they are given the opportunity to educate Wally with the help of Wise. • Wise and the children have to teach Wally the dangers of playing in the sun without sunscreen, the dangers of smoking, why it is important to eat fresh fruit and vegetables and how much fun it can be to play outside.

  7. What can you do in conjunction with your local schools? • Act as your local ambassador for the School Action programmes. Explain the link between Centra and Action Cancer. • Encourage local schools not currently availing of the service to contact Action Cancer and get their school scheduled into the roadshow. • Keep in touch with schools where bookings are made an attend the roadshow to present the Action Cancer certificate. You may also donate fruit to the children on the day of the roadshow. • Consider donating fresh fruit & vegetables to your local school for 1 week throughout the year to encourage healthier eating. • Do joint fundraising activities with the schools - Each Centra store has been set a fundraising target of £300 for Year 1. Incorporate your fundraising into your Local Marketing Plan. • All fundraising initiatives have valuable PR opportunities. If you do something shout about it - invite a local photographer along for the presentation of the cheque. Ensure this is done in conjunction with the school involved. Action Cancer have provided a standard press release overleaf. Please use this when contacting local press. Further copies can be obtained from MSVC Marketing Department. • When collecting a cheque from a school, it is the retailers responsibility to forward the cheque to Action Cancer, using the remittance slip included in this pack.

  8. Why fundraise? • Musgrave Supervalu Centra is already putting £17, 400 into Action Cancer in support of this initiative in Year One. It is important that Centra stores also raise money to support this programme. • By being involved with this sponsorship you will benefit from: • Credit from customers, people you do business with and public representatives who will see your contribution and credit you for it. • Fundraising is a great way to build team and customer loyalty. • All of the funds raised for Action Cancer is spent in NI. Centra will therefore be associated with a local charity that impacts on the local community. • As an organisation we have a corporate social responsibility and through supporting a NI charity we show that we care. You will be seen as putting something back into the community. • Community based sponsorship offers substantial publicity opportunities.
