  2. Defining Peer Discovery and Group September 19, 2012 Samsung <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  3. 802.15.8 PAC PAR • 5.2 Scope: • This standard defines PHY and MAC mechanism for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) Peer Aware Communications (PAC) optimized for peer to peer and infrastructureless communications with fully distributed coordination. PAC features include: discovery for peer information without association, discovery signaling rate, typically 100 kbps, the number of devices in the discovery, scalable data transmission rates, typically 10 Mbps, group communications with simultaneous membership in multiple groups, typically up to 10, relative positioning, multihop relay, security, and operational in selected globally available unlicensed/licensed bands below 11 GHz capable of supporting these requirements. <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  4. Peer Discovery • Definition • Discovery of peers in proximity • Discovery of peers through peer identity information sent from PDs in proximity <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  8. Device & Service Discovery(Conventional) • Device discovery • Discovery of devices through scanning (beacon or probe response) • Service discovery • High layer protocol (UPnP, bonjour) <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  9. Network Discovery • 802.11u • Discovery of suitable networks (pre-association) through the advertisement of access network information (network type, roaming, venue) <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  10. Peer Discovery @ PAC • Suggested definition • Discovery of peers without peering through peer identity information sent from PDs in proximity <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  15. 802.15.8 PAC PAR • 5.2 Scope: • This standard defines PHY and MAC mechanism for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) Peer Aware Communications (PAC) optimized for peer to peer and infrastructureless communications with fully distributed coordination. PAC features include: discovery for peer information without association, discovery signaling rate, typically 100 kbps, the number of devices in the discovery, scalable data transmission rates, typically 10 Mbps, group communications with simultaneous membership in multiple groups, typically up to 10, relative positioning, multihop relay, security, and operational in selected globally available unlicensed/licensed bands below 11 GHz capable of supporting these requirements. <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  16. Group • Group at higher layer • Related to human recognition • I am a member of • Facebook • Starbucks • Wall-mart • IEEE • And there are others who are members of group as same as mine. <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  17. Group • Group at MAC layer • Related to machine recognition • Multicast group? • Relaying group? • Group at MAC layer is not always identical to Group at higher layer • I have two friends and three company colleagues. • They are in the same multicast group if I send the same text to them at a chatting window. • So it is recognized as members in single group at MAC. <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  18. Suggested Definition of Group • Group at MAC layer • Group identification is indicated by higher layer • Group member at MAC layer • A PD which is identified by matching with Group identification from higher layer • It can be identified at peer discovery or peering. <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics>

  19. Locality of Group Notion PD6 PD2 PD1’s group members : PD4 PD3 PD5 PD9 PD1 PD5 PD4 PD7 PD7’s group members : PD4 PD5 PD8 PD3 PD6 PD9 *2-hop limitation <Seung-Hoon Park et.al.>, <Samsung Electronics> • Locality of 1-hop transmission • Due to a limit on transmission range • Locality of multi-hop transmission • Due to a limit of hop-count • Locality of group notion per each PD
