  2. Let’s recall the facts • 1 gallon = 4 quarts • 1quart = 2 pints • 1 pint = 2 cups • 1 cup = 8 oz Let’s find a pattern with these…

  3. The larger measurement has multiple smaller units within it and The smaller measurements are divided among the larger units.

  4. The larger measurement has multiple smaller units within it… A gallon is a larger unit then a quart. 1 gallon we said equale 4 quarts…so there are multiple quarts inside the gallon. So we should conclude that when given the larger unit, and are asked to find the smaller unit, we use multiplication. HUH, you say?! Let’s do an example.

  5. Example: larger to smaller unit 4 quarts = __________ pints We know that 1 quart = 2 pints Since 2 pts are in each qt and there are 4 qts here, multiply 2 and 4. 2 * 4 = 8 SOLUTION: 4 qts = 8 pts

  6. Another example: 7 pints = _______ cups Fact: 1 pt = 2 c Fact: going from larger unit to smaller unit, so multiplying Fact: 2 cups in each pint, and there are 7 pints. 2 * 7 = 14 SOLUTION: 7 pints = 14 cups

  7. The smaller measurements are divided among the larger units… A quart is a smaller unit then a gallon. 4 quarts we said equal 1 gallon…so there are 4 separate quarts in the gallon. So we should conclude that when given the smaller unit, and are asked to find the larger unit, we use division. HUH, you say?! Let’s do an example.

  8. Example: smaller to larger unit 4 pints= __________ quarts We separate or divide the pints into each quart. Since there are 2 pints per quart, divide 4 and 2. Quart Quart P P P P P P P P 4/2 = 2 SOLUTION: 4 pints = 2 quarts

  9. Another example: 6 cups= _______ pints Fact: 1 pt = 2 c Fact: going from smaller unit to larger unit, so dividing Fact: 2 cups in each pint, and there are 6 cups. 6/2 = 3 SOLUTION: 6 cups= 3 pints

  10. Now you try: • 3 gallons = _______ quarts • 9 pints = ________ cups • 20 ounces = _________ cups • 10 quarts = __________ gallons
