  3. AIM of MESMA The MESMA project focuses on contributing to a sustainable development of seas and coastal areas MESMA will produce management tools for monitoring, evaluation and implementation of Spatially Managed Areas (SMAs)

  4. Aim of our visit Black sea case study -Exchange knowlegde -Governance study Black Sea region -Perform research: questionnaire, interview and observation.

  5. Who benefits from MESMA? • Beneficiaries: • governments, • local authorities, • stakeholders, • managerial bodies for planning and decision making • the public in general

  6. Governance in MESMA Johnston (2000) refers to Governance as: ‘the involvement of a wide range of institutions and actors in the production of policy outcomes….. involving coordination throughnetworks and partnerships’

  7. Research topics Governance • Combining top-down role of state and bottom-up participative approaches • Inter-sectoral integration and related power issues including compensation (in emerging MSP framework) • Cross-border issues between countries • Justice issues • Influence of differences in knowledge and the influence of uncertainty in decision-making.
