  3. What is a Media CONGLOMERATE? Can you find examples of Media Conglomerates? Try to find 2 Film Industry Conglomerates and 2 Newspaper Conglomerates. List what companies they own. Why are BIG conglomerate companies so powerful? Look in detail now at News Corp International...

  5. Concentration of Ownership As big media conglomerates get even bigger, what are some of the concerns about the ‘concentration of ownership’? Five big Film Companies control nearly all of global film production. Why could this be a problem? Also five big newspaper companies control all the main newspapers in the UK? What are these companies?

  6. Horizontal and Vertical Integration This is the process by which Media Institutions buy other media companies and become huge conglomerates that dominate the mass market. Horizontal Integration is when a media producer buys another production company like News Corporation buying The Times. Vertical Integration is when a media producer buys companies in the same distribution line like Disney Buying buying Buena Vista or Warner Bros buying Vue Cinemas.

  7. Tie-ins and Synergy Horizontally and vertically integrated conglomerates are able to feature the same content across different media channels, or connect their output across their organisation like advertising Sky TV in The Sun. Can you find any other examples of Ownership effecting media output?

How is your topic area CROSS MEDIA promoted? • Find out who the parent company is. • Does your topic belong to a subsidiary company within a conglomerate? • Which sister companies does it work synergistically with to cross promote itself? • Is your topic area part of a horizontally or vertically integrated company? What are the benefits &/or drawbacks of this?
