  4. Metals, Metalloids, nonmetals Metals are to the left of the line (the majority of all elements) Non-metals are to the right of the line Metalloids (hybrids of metals and non-metals) are “walkin’ the line”.

  5. Metals! • Majority of elements • Good conductors of heat & electricity(use in wires & cooking) • Luster = shiny (at least when freshly cut…Alkali metals..check ‘Em Out • Solids at room Temp. (except Mercury) • Many are Ductile (drawn into wires) and Malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets/bend)

  6. Non-metals • Greater variation of properties with non-metals compared to the metals. • Most are gases at room temperature. • Have properties that are typically opposite of metals: • Poor conductors of heat and electricity (exception: carbon) • Brittle (shatter if hit with hammer)

  7. Metalloids • Border stair-step on periodic table, excluding aluminum, polonium • Have properties similar to both metals and non-metals. • Often properties can be changed by changing condition.
