Our God is a Great and Wonderful God, Worthy of Sacrifice • David’s praise of God in 1Chronicles29:11-14 • Christians are to offer sacrifice • 1Peter 2:5 “you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” • Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Our God is a Great and Wonderful God, Worthy of Sacrifice • Giving to God is giving BACK to God (Matthew 25:29-30) • Serving God, sacrificing to God, requires work. • Luke 13:24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” • Adam Clarke, “He who has a religion that costs nothing has a religion that is worth nothing.”

  4. True Sacrifice Must Meet Certain Requirements • It must be the FIRST FRUITS, • Deuteronomy 26:1-2 “And it shall be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it, 2 that you shall take some of the first of all the produce of the ground, which you shall bring from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and put it in a basket and go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide.”

  5. True Sacrifice Must Meet Certain Requirements • After you buy _______ you’ll see what you have left? • After you’re through doing _________ you’ll see if you have time and energy left to study, teach, serve… • It must be the BEST we can offer.

  6. True Sacrifice Must Meet Certain Requirements • Like the Passover lamb, Exodus 12:5 “Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.” • God knows if we are offering our best, Malachi 1:6-8. • “Your best is good enough, no matter how poor it is. Anything less than your best is not good enough, no matter how good it is.” Unknown

  7. Examples of People Not Putting Personal Expense over Religion • Daniel, Daniel 6:4-16 • Shadrach, Meshach & Abed-nego, Daniel 3:4-6,12-14,16-18 • John the Baptist, (Mark 6:17-28) • Jesus’ Apostles (Matthew 19:27-28)

  8. Examples of People Not Putting Personal Expense over Religion • Paul, Philippians 3:7-8 “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ”.

  9. The Cost is Personal • Luke 9:23 “Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” • Take up and bear the cross occurs five times in Christ’s recorded teaching.

The Cost is Personal • It may cost family and friends, Matthew 10:34-38. • (1Timothy 5:8, John 19:26,27, Ephesians 6:1-4) and many other passages teach us to love and respect others, especially family. • If a person or group of people is pulling us away, even if it’s family, then we must forsake all to follow Jesus.

  11. The Cost is Personal • If a couple is in an unlawful marriage, they may even have to break their marriage up if they are in unlawful marriage, (Matthew 19:1-10). • You may have to cut friendship ties, 1Corinthians15:33 “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits.’”

  12. The Cost is Personal • It may cost you your job. • It may cost you with pain and suffering, even costing your life. • Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” • If we don’t suffer, we may need to reevaluate our walk as Christians, 2Timothy 3:12 “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”

  13. We Typically Have a Distorted View of Sacrifice • We’re actually spoiled when it comes down to it. • God’s people have endured torture, trial of mocking and scourgings, chains and imprisonment, stoned, sawn in two, slain with the sword, wandered about in animal skins, destitute, afflicted, tormented…(Hebrews 11:32-38). • We aren’t facing torture or death, yet we cave so easily, often to loss of CONVENIENCES!!

  14. We Typically Have a Distorted View of Sacrifice • Saturday services i.l.o. Sunday offered even though they are not authorized (Acts 20:7). • We can’t stand to give up some TV & movies, so we change our standards to accept entertainment that is unfit for Christians.

  15. We Typically Have a Distorted View of Sacrifice • A Facebook post from a sister in Christ “I have a question I’d like you to think about. Say you invited some people to your home. They were there about two hours and within that time they used profanity fourteen times, two of which were taking the name of your Lord in vain. How would you feel about them? Would you be praising them as “the greatest”? Yet Christians will pay good money to go and see a movie like “Dark Knight Rises” and sing it’s praises on fb (Facebook). I think I’ll save my money and wait to watch it at home on Clearplay where I can enjoy it without listening to all that trash that I would refuse to listen to otherwise.”

  16. We Typically Have a Distorted View of Sacrifice • We cave to the world’s standard for modest dress (1Timothy 2:9). • Sports, weddings, swimming, etc. • Somehow, even some blasphemous Muslims can cover up in the face of ridicule.

  17. We Typically Have a Distorted View of Sacrifice • We cave to the view that everything in moderation is fine, particularly alcohol. • Even though Proverbs 23:31 says to not even “look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it swirls around smoothly.”

  18. We Typically Have a Distorted View of Sacrifice • “As goes the world, so goes the church”, just a few years or months behind. • Less declaring the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27) • Jokes, stories, no conviction (Acts 2:37) • Spread the myth that “everything happens for a reason”, (Matthew 5:45)

  19. Conclusion • True religion cost God something. • John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” • True religion cost Jesus something. • 2Corinthians 8:9 “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”

  20. What is it costing you? • Are you willing to fully give yourself to Him (2Corinthians 8:5)? • Don’t “give” to God, what costs you nothing.
