A refugee is “a person who is outside his/her country of nationality or habitual residence; has a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion; and is unable or unwilling to avail himself/herself of the protection of that country, or to return there, for fear of persecution." - UN Refugee Convention Article 1

  6. Why does UNHCR help refugees? Refugees are often in very vulnerable situations.

  7. What sort of protection or help can UNHCR provide? • Tents, blankets, medical care and education • Registration and refugee status determination and negotiating with authorities

  8. 43 million people are displaced worldwide. 845,800 asylum-seekers in 2010 UNHCR is present and gives protection to refugees and internally displaced persons in over 120 countries.
