  16. Wireless Printing Security Policy A router will be used for wireless printer sharing and all the following steps are recommended to configure and secure a wireless router when used with an AARP Tax-Aide network for printer sharing: 1. Infrastructure network configuration will be used. Ad-Hoc networks are not permitted. 2. The wireless router or access point will be protected by changing the default username and adding a password. 3. The manufacturer’s default SSID will be changed to "TAV" (without quotes). 4. WPA encryption will be used. 5. MAC address filtering is optional and adds extra security when used in conjunction with WPA. 6. A wireless network will never be connected such as to allow connection to the Internet while using wireless networking for printer sharing. 7. High power antennae and/or other signal boosters will not be used. 8. File sharing will be turned off. New Jersey Tax-Aide

  17. Wireless Router Setup • Change default user name and add password • SSID: TAV • WPA encryption New Jersey Tax-Aide

  18. Computers • Operating systems • XP, Vista, Windows-7; 32 and 64 bit • Later versions generally network better • Firewalls: Windows firewall is recommended • Wireless configuration • Older AARP computers may not support WPA • Install settings using a flash drive • For obstinate computers , connect to wireless router with Ethernet cable New Jersey Tax-Aide

  19. Save & Install Network Settings using a flash drive • http://njtaxaide.org/tavolunteers/Technology/Networking.htm • Under Wireless, see “Network properties on a flash drive” • Save network properties to a flash drive using Vista or Windows-7 • Install on any operating system by inserting flash drive New Jersey Tax-Aide

  20. Network Configuration Questions Are these configurations acceptable? Why? • Wired network for Desktop printing connected to the internet • Laptop connected to TWO via library unencrypted wireless network printing to HP1102w in the wireless mode • ERO checking for TWO acknowledgements from an Internet Explorer equipped smart phone at Starbucks New Jersey Tax-Aide

  21. Wireless Security Questions • What encryption type is required on Tax-Aide wireless networks? • The login for the TAV wireless router’s web server is: user – admin, password – password • If I am not able to configure a personal computer for access to the wireless network, what are my options? New Jersey Tax-Aide

  22. TWO Wireless Computer • Preliminary information • 1 scan required prior to using TWO in production • Scan computer on 2 web sites • Download some software for scans • Ignore anti-virus results • Correct other problems, if any • Report successful results at a 3rd web site • More details expected at TC Seminar New Jersey Tax-Aide

  23. Network Printer Inventory All have USB connections Brothers have parallel connections New Jersey Tax-Aide

  24. Network Printers • Configuration page • Printer name [Host name] • MAC address [Hardware address] • IP address • Firmware [Firmware datecode] • Firmware New Jersey Tax-Aide

  25. Firmware • HP or Brother web site • Search for the printer model • Downloads New Jersey Tax-Aide

  26. Network Printer Drivers • Which driver to use • Driver Install Options • Recommendations New Jersey Tax-Aide

  27. Drivers • HP 1102w & 1606dn • Driver is in the printer • Use HP Smart Install in printer • If the 1102w is not on the network, use USB cable • Brother 5250dn & 5730dw • Use Windows-7 CD or non W-7 CD as needed • 5370dw may need 1 driver if connected by Ethernet cable and another if wireless New Jersey Tax-Aide

  28. Drivers - continued • HP 1505n • Full Feature Software & Driver, version 7 • All operating systems, 32 & 64 bit • HP 1022n • All 32 bit operating systems : Host Based Plug & Play Package, version 20071210 • All 64 bit operating systems : Host Based Plug & Play Basic Driver, version 20071210 • Install as USB first, then put printer on the network and use Windows Install Printer Wizard to install network driver New Jersey Tax-Aide

  29. Network Printer Driver Options • HP 1022n & 1505n: consider IP address reservation • Individual name requires one driver for each unit of that model • Model name allows one driver to print to all units of that model New Jersey Tax-Aide

  30. IP Address at Install • The driver will print to any unit of that model at the IP address of the printer when the driver was installed • If the printer is assigned a different IP address, a new driver must be installed • A driver that worked yesterday may not work today • A driver that worked at site 1 may not work at site 2 • Reserving an IP address in the router enables one driver for each printer model New Jersey Tax-Aide

  31. Individual Name • The driver will print to this unit regardless of IP address • If the IP address is different tomorrow, the driver will find the printer and print to it • A different driver is required for each unit of this model. The printers at site 1 and site 2 each require their own driver – not a big deal if there are only 1 or 2, but with more? New Jersey Tax-Aide

  32. Model Name • Changing the [Host]name of each unit to the model name enables the driver to print to all units of this model regardless of IP address • If the IP address of a printer is different tomorrow, the driver will find it and print to it • The driver will print to the same model printers at site 1 and site 2 regardless of IP address New Jersey Tax-Aide

  33. Summary of Options New Jersey Tax-Aide

  34. Demonstratons • Install HP 1606dn driver • Address reservation [in router] – after lunch • Advanced – end of day • Printer driver Advanced Port [on computer] • Printer Host name change [in printer EWS] • Changing the router address to avoid conflicts when using TWO [in router] New Jersey Tax-Aide

  35. SSID:TAVDEMO • Encryption:WPA • Passphrase:ilove2dotaxes!

  36. Network Printer withReserved Address • Use Address Reservation in router to always assign the same IP address to this printer • HP 1022n: 192.168.1.51 • HP 1505n: 192.168.1.50 • Assignment of IP address is by printer MAC so printer and router must be operated as a pair • A computer with a 1505n-50 driver can print to a different 1505n on another network if the printer has IP address 192.168.1.50 New Jersey Tax-Aide

  37. Address Reservation • Access the router’s web server: http://192.168.1.1/ • Log in • Select LAN IP Setup • Under Address Reservation click Add • Follow “Fixed IP Address for Network Printers” on http://njtaxaide.org/tavolunteers/Technology/Networking.htm New Jersey Tax-Aide
