The Key • Get to know the members of your officiating team • Encourage each other during the contest • Take responsibility for your own mistakes • Be honest when giving feedback to others • Share you expertise with others • Take advice about improvement from other officials • Never ignore or alienate your partners by criticizing them • Be positive with your reactions to them

  3. Weaknesses • Showing arrogance to the point of being overbearing • Indecisiveness and passive calls or not having the courage to make tough calls • Ignoring fellow officials and not communicating with them • Criticizing fellow officials to a third party • Mingling with spectators or coaches • Responding to comments of coaches or fans • ALL OF THESE EXHIBIT A LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE GAME AND FOR THE OFFICIATING PARTNERS

  5. Politics • Is it “who you know” or “what you know” ?? • Politics does not have to be negative .. I can be simply getting along with other officials without being pushy, or offensive • Those who are accepted are those who are respected, trusted and like. • Networking can be a slow process • The “inner circle” ? • There is nothing wrong with making professional contacts to enhance your career

  6. Officiating Camps • No different than players going to a camp to improve their skills or to be seen by people than can help them move on to the next level.
